A sort of pro-bono Doctors Without Borders thing had been Bodhi's plan, something for Jyn to assuage her guilt of being Galen Erso's daughter and resurrect her parent's legacy by using her inheritance to pull a Bill and Melinda Gates and offer free vaccines to everyone. She's not a family doctor, but everyone learns how to give an immunization when they're still in school.
It's a fight with the hospital to let her go and a fight to let her take a team of doctors with her, but the Organa family pulls through with a sizable donation and Jyn manages to yell her way across the globe to one of the few countries where vaccines could eradicate their illnesses if they had access to the vaccines, with those vaccines in tow and a flock of doctors and nurses to help her and a small security team for when she has to trek through the countryside to bring the vaccines to the poorer sections that can't afford to make it into the city.
Some of the doctors are miles away from their chosen field -- surgeons and trauma fellows and ortho residents, an endocrinologist -- but everyone is there for a reason and the people who need free medical care sometimes need care in the shape of their specialties so it all works out.
Early in the morning, Jyn and her team had set off for the countryside, administering vaccines and offering insight and free checkups as they went before night started to fall and Chirrut -- their blind navigator and half of their married security duo -- had suggested they set up camp for the time being. Having camped with Jyn before, Bodhi gently suggested she not even breathe near the tents lest they collapse and suffocate them all in their sleep, so instead she set off for the woods to collect sticks for their fire, grumbling to herself as she goes and muffling an annoyed yelp when she leans down to scoop up a pile and headbutts a tree stump hidden in the twilight.
Cassian has spent many years in the literal field and has washed off blood too many times to count. He's very good at what he does, but a trauma surgeon right on the front is exhausting no matter how skilled he is. It's reaching the point where he probably needs a change and actually acknowledges it to himself, so when he hears about the immunization efforts backed by the Organas, he manages to get a place on the team while finally getting himself honorably discharged. He feels like it's a good transition rather than going straight into any kind of hospital setting. It's already a welcome change, the camp already much more quiet than he's used to, and it's definitely an adjustment.
He keeps himself busy helping with set up, and he's pitching a tent when Bodhi comes up to him and asks him to go please help his sister, who is probably off being a disaster in the woods. Telling Bodhi no is going to be an issue.
It's very easy to find her by following the noise at the very least, between the swearing and the thunk. "If you need a doctor, I'm sure it would be very easy to find one."
Jyn whirls around, dropping a couple of the sticks she had already collected. "Shit." Her eyes squeeze shut and she rubs the heel of her hand against her forehead. "Fuckin'.. sorry. You know, Mum told me to keep the cussing to a minimum but I've already cocked that right up, haven't I?"
She hates camping.
Her secret shame since her mother is so into nature -- and so is Jyn, honestly. She just isn't good at camping and Jyn basically hates everything she isn't instantly good at because everything is supposed to come easy to her. She's young for a doctor because she graduated so early and she's always been the clever one who could figure any puzzle out. Except camping. Everything that has to do with camping is a disaster and she's constantly frustrated by it.
"Do you want to check to see if I'm concussed?" She's joking, tacking it on belatedly to the end of his jest, but heck she might be. This conversation might be the most she's said to another adult that isn't Bodhi all day so it is completely against the norm already. Meanwhile she'd spent twenty minutes debating super powers with a five year old and her little brother in the afternoon while Bodhi dealt with the parents.
"I've probably only noticed it some of the time." Is he being serious? A smartass? His tone makes it impossible to tell. The reality is he has heard her swearing a lot in passing. He was dimly aware it was her, like he's aware of his surroundings most of the time, but now he's never going to forget since they're actually interacting.
Cassian offers half a shrug, with the tiniest tilt of his mouth; it's not a smile, but it's light enough to hopefully carry on the joking around. He clicks on his flashlight and shines it at her face, not directly in her eyes, more at her chin. "I did come prepared."
To find sticks in the dark, but apparently someone's not very careful. No wonder Bodhi was worried.
"In my defense, it wasn't this dark when I started. It gets dark fast."
She doesn't squint at the light, but her mouth slants into a faint smile. When she and Bodhi were selecting people for their roving team, Bodhi had picked Cassian because of his military service and had made a joke about how those boys were something like Boy Scouts.
Always prepared.
Which stands to reason, "Did Bodhi send you after me?"
Jyn is exhausted, frankly. She was meant to have two weeks off when they returned but Jyn pushed it off, saving the vacation days up to probably not use again like she'd done last year, even with Bodhi and her parents scolding her. She'd missed her clinic, she wanted to get back to doing more -- even if with kids a lot of the time that mean getting thrown up on or peed on.
The clinic itself is bright and cheery, walls splashed with blues and greens and sunny yellows, decorated with ornithological sketches and littered with potted plants and bright bundles of flowers. The hallway from the waiting room to the exam areas is painted with a massive mural of a tropical paradise with bright birds and tall palm trees and beautiful blue waters. (The signatures at the bottom indicate it was painted by the students of a nearby high school.)
She's been running late all day thanks to two emergency sick cases she'd snuck in behind the receptionists back so she's edging on twenty minutes late when she pushes open the door to her next patient, head down as she peers at the chart, clearly distracted by catching up. Little Poe Dameron, suffering from a fever and a barking cough and also he's teething. Poor lamb.
"Sorry, Shara, it's been a mad house in here." Poe barks his cough, inhaling and exhaling loudly, and Jyn tsks as she heads over to the sink to wash her hands, holding her tablet under her elbow and willing it not to fall before she dries off her hands. "I can hear the bark you mentioned, so it's definitely not whooping cough."
His sister neglected to mention who her son's doctor was. At least that's what Cassian tells himself when he walks into the office and gets told that Dr. Erso will see him shortly.
Erso is not exactly a common name, but he thinks he would have known it was Jyn before walking in. Then again, Cassian has not seen Poe for months. He couldn't have know who is doctor was! Shara kept him updated, but not to minute details. He has a lot of time to wait and wishes he didn't, because no amount of time tells him how he should react when Jyn walks in.
Still, his nephew is sick and he's on babysitting duty, so there's no complaints when he manages to squeeze in to see his regular doctor. Shara was very insistent. He's standing up with Poe in his arms, rocking him a little bit in the hopes of soothing all his poor little baby woes.
Poe's cough turns into a whine after Jyn walks in, and Cassian still can't quite believe it's her. He wasn't sure they'd ever end up seeing each other again. Hipster Brooklyn brings people together, apparently. She doesn't even notice it's him standing there, which is... probably fair. His sister is tall and dark just like he is.
He coughs, the sound very clearly not a woman, but it's meant to give her a warning of her mistake. He still has no idea what to say in this situation whatsoever. "Not Shara, I am afraid. Sorry to disappoint. But I have heard the bark too."
Jyn's head snaps up with a whispered "what the fuck!" of startlement, fingers quickly enlarging Poe's patient file. Father: Kes Dameron. Andor, he must be Shara's brother then? Brother in law through her husband? No, Cassian said he had a sister, he must have meant Shara. Get it together, Erso, this is a place of business, focus on the patient.
She nods once. "I answered when she called his morning, she didn't say someone else was coming so I assumed..." A shrug, she seems to get her shit together when she steps forward to set the tablet down on the table and hold her arms out for Poe. He looks so unhappy, sick babies break her heart.
"Not important, is it, love?" Her voice softens the moment she starts to address the baby, the same way it had done when she spoke to the children they immunized. Kids make her melt. "I hear that you're feeling a bit poorly, is that so? I can't promise you'll feel better when you leave, but I can promise we'll sort out a plan to make you feel better. How's that sound?"
No matter the age, Jyn's babies are her patients, they get the questions. Even if it's their guardians that do most of the answering. The shift in her tone is apparent enough when she gives Cassian a brief once over. "You look well. Holiday suits you."
Cassian tries to swallow back any amusement at her whispered what the fuck and the way she double checks undoubtedly on just who Poe's father is. He can't say he blames her, but he does make a mental note to chastise his sister later.
"It was last minute. He got a lot sicker overnight, and I was meant to have him today. If it will be a problem, we can call her for any kind of permission you may need. She was preoccupied with worry, I imagine." He's not sure Shara has him listed as any sort of approved adult to make any decisions, but he passes the baby over easily.
The way Jyn speaks to Poe is very familiar. She has zero sense of manners towards adults, but she's so good with children, that when he'd found out she was a pediatrician it wasn't a surprise in the slightest. What's more of a surprise is how they all ended up in Brooklyn.
Poe whimpers and yelps, so very unhappy at being sick but he likes Jyn very much, evident from the way he tries to burrow against her. He can't understand her, but her tone is still very soothing. Cassian's face falls sympathetically, and he brushes his hand over the curls on his tiny head. He lets out a very sarcastic sigh of a laugh. "I am not sure about it suiting me. But it is good to see you too."
Oh it's good to see her. She didn't say that -- those weren't her words even if it is what she meant -- and it makes her feel a little... something. Something! Her fingers prod at Poe's neck, tipping his chin up to check his glands.
"I think it's just croup, with his little bark and wheeze, it's been going around." Poe tries to jerk his head out of her hand and Jyn lets him, letting him tuck his head against her chest. Poor lamb. "But I'll check for the flu, too. Luckily, my little bear, you've already had your vaccine so if it is the flu you shouldn't feel ill much longer."
She looks up at Cassian. "Has he been having occasional hyperventilation or look like he's struggling to breathe?"
Cassian has an apartment with Jyn. And a baby, of course, both of which have existed for them in some form for a while. But they spent the last five months waiting out Jyn's lease to finish crammed in her tiny flat, the final stretch with a newborn. A few months into Jyn's unexpected pregnancy, he suggested they just... move in. Together. Leases and other dumb reasons kept it from happening till now because they tried to be responsible adults, but Cassian has to admit he's very... excited? Happy?
He's moving into an apartment with his girlfriend and his son, and even though his own mother definitely hinted that he was doing things a little backwards, it feels right. Their place is nice, centered between both their jobs, still in the same hipsterfied area, and only on the second floor. There's a parking garage next door. It's a good find, one they can afford with both their salaries now.
They kept a hodgepodge of their own things, and the rest is in a storage unit until they have the time to properly go through it - which is a real big up in the air because even though they both have plenty of people willing to babysit, Mateo seems a little more important than organization right now. Besides, they're both on leave! No time to waste when the infant exists. There's still a bunch of boxes stacked all over, but all the major furniture has been set up. The couch sits neatly in the living room, and Kes made sure the TV was hooked up, mostly so Poe would have something to distract him while everyone worked. They kept his mattress for themselves, but shoved hers away for the eventual guest room. Kitchen stools are a mix-n-match from both of their places, but Jyn seems very keen on keeping it that way.
"Our dinner choices include casserole, casserole, more casserole, all courtesy of Kes probably out of spite, but Shara has made us tamales. Bodhi fried up some tandoori chicken, but there are also three different curries, and my mama has given us several kinds of enchiladas." There's a pause, while he shuffles around something in the fridge. "Sorry, I forgot the fourth casserole."
He's never had so much food from other people before in his life. He looks back over at Jyn, smiling softly at the sight of her with Mateo curled up in her arms, and for a moment completely forgets it's time to eat, at least until the fridge beeps at him to remind him it's still open.
The apartment is something new to get used to when she's still getting used to all the other new things, but at least the apartment doesn't cry in the middle of the night and she's only knocked one stack of boxes over since they moved in. Besides, she's discovered over the years that she likes dealing with new things with Cassian at her side.
She shifts the baby so his head flops on to her shoulder and his little tush rests on her arm.
"Oh, gosh, for a second I thought we didn't have casseroles," Jyn says with a sarcastic laugh, turning real when Mateo farts on her. "Oh, thank you, my love. I think that is how he feels about casserole, no offense Tio Kes."
Moving forward, she stands on her tiptoes to rest her chin on his shoulder, peering into the fridge. "Can I have... a beer." She doesn't like the pumping experience so she rarely pumps just to pour the milk down the drain but she really wants some alcohol and it's just sitting there next to all those casseroles. "And whatever the spiciest food is."
He hears Mateo fart and lets out his own laugh, a very unrestricted sound that is probably caused by more than just the simple fart. He's tired from the day and also nervous but happy and delighted all at once. "Don't let Kes hear you. He'll make another."
Cassian tilts his head just enough to brush his lips against her forehead. "You can have whatever you like." He reaches in and pulls out two beers, settling them on the counter right next to the fridge. One is for him, obviously. "Mami said she made everything mild, so probably a curry."
He reads over Bodhi's chicken scratch and tugs out the bowl with a little flame drawn on the label for Jyn's benefit, quickly followed by the giant bowl of rice he also prepared for them. He turns around slowly after setting them all on the counter too, slipping his arm to catch Jyn's waist so she can't step away from him while he closes the fridge door. "Should we eat on our couch, or in the kitchen?"
"Couch. Otherwise we are sitting on the kitchen floor." She is too tired to sit at the counter, honestly she is too tired to sit on the floor, she just wants to curl up on the couch and pass out with the fork still in her hand.
She looks up at him, content thought admittedly tired smile settling on her features. Their first official dinner in their first official apartment together with their first official baby. Everything is so perfect and wonderful and Jyn is very, very happy.
(And very, very tired.)
And blurting words out at random because she is so very, very tired. "Are you sure your mother likes me? I know your dad does because I talk shit about football with him and 'cause of that one time I put Kes in a headlock until he fainted, but your mom..." They're doing everything backwards! They're not married! She defiled Carina's precious baby boy.
"Good. I was thinking couch too." They can lay Mateo down between them and free up their hands. He likes to lay between them, so he can look back and forth at their faces.
He is about to cup her cheek and lavish a few kisses on her tired face when she just starts rambling, which he should have expected. She's tired, that's what she does. He leans in to kiss her anyway, just once on the lips. He tucks some hair behind her ears and offers her a very soft smile. "Jyn. She loves you, because I love you. When Shara moved in with Kes before they were married, she was not happy, but in the end, all she really cares about is that her children are happy. And I am very happy."
Jyn's parents have a beach house, a concept that is still ridiculous to Jyn because she has a millenial mindset contrary to the cushy lifestyle she can actually afford. Ridiculous as it may be, Jyn loves the beach house so she jumps at the chance to drive down to the shore with Cassian one week in the dead of summer. It's so hot the seatbelt burned her hand on the way down but it doesn't matter once they are at the house.
Jyn is happy to lay on the deck in one of her skimpy, mismatched bikinis that are only skimpy because she hasn't bought a new one in something like ten years. Everything is great. She wakes up to the sound of waves and Cassian's fingers gliding across the bare skin of her back, she's exhausted from the sun and playing in the surf instead of from work, she only has to socialize with her boyfriend, she read a book.
But there is... a thing. Which she discovered when they were getting groceries the first night. They've been at the beach for six days so far. It's about time.
"Hey Andor, can you come here a sec?" She's sitting on the porch swing on the deck, looking out at the waves while he was puttering around inside doing whatever. She knows her voice carries through the open glass doors.
A beach house is just... insane to him. He and his sister both had to join the military to get through college, and even though they're both doing pretty well for themselves now, Cassian is still frugal. Jyn is too, which has always been a nice wavelength to share.
Just because a beach house is ridiculous to him doesn't mean he isn't going to enjoy it when the opportunity presents itself. He likes to swim. He likes Jyn. A week with just the two of them is honestly an amazing concept, and he is here for all of it, especially her mismatched bikinis. It's so very Jyn, and he has zero complaints when she just lounges around the house in them too.
He hears her calling out, and his response is an instant, "One second," pitched high enough to carry outside. He comes out shortly after with a soft smile and kisses her on the head before he sits down beside her. He likes this swing. He's going to miss it when they go back home. "I was filling the dishwasher. Hi."
"Hi." She smiles up at him, feeling a shiver of nerves down her spine. Maybe she should have put pants on for this. Or at the very least a tee shirt. She feels suddenly under dressed as she shifts around to sit up on her knees, gathering her hands in her lap. She especially wishes she had a tee shirt on because then she could fidget with it.
"I was wondering if we could talk about something." She chews on her bottom lip nervously, the anxiety clear behind her eyes. This is something important, something she is nervous about, but something necessary enough to preface it with requesting to talk.
Oh. She's nervous? She's smiling but she's definitely anxious about something, looking like she wants to fidget. His expression shifts into something softer, attention wholly on her and giving her the kind of focus for something that is so very clearly important.
"Of course, Jyn." She asked, she didn't even jump right into it, her usual modus operandi. He idly touches his fingertips against hers, in case she wants to take his hand. "Is everything okay?"
"I'm not sure yet." She doesn't take his hand, hesitating before reaching behind her to pull out a small, regular letter envelope that was formerly addressed to her parents but their names have since been scribbled out and Cassian's name has been written across it in Jyn's loopy scrawl. Inside is an index card with a little drawing on it.
She passes it over and waits for Cassian to open it before she explains. "I'm late and I was feeling..." She shrugs. Gross basically. "I'd had those headaches, my stomach was all knotty, and god, my tits were so sore, felt like I'd run a marathon without a bra. So when we were at the grocery store I bought a test while you were getting the chicken and." Another shrug, a weak smile. "I'm pregnant, Cassian."
Jyn is not fleeing Cassian's family, she's fleeing both of their families. She'd gone inside to change Luna's diaper and, in theory, nurse her daughter but it was just constant "casual" mentions about how Jyn and Cassian are still unmarried even though they have two children now and only one of them is baptized! (They're getting to it, everything takes twice as long with two kids so they'll be lucky if Luna is baptized within her first year.)
Luna's clamped on her hip, nursing while Jyn walks because she will start wailing for the sand the moment Jyn stops next to where Cassian and Mateo are playing so she has to walk and eat.
She actually keeps eating when Jyn stops, which prompts a faint, "oh, you're a hungry girl today" as Jyn settles into the beach chair next to her not husband, snagging her drink to swig some water back. "We have to baptize her so they'll get off my back for defiling you and living in sin. It was my mother this time. And she never pushes! Luna, do not bite Mama. That's not funny."
Jyn is definitely fleeing. Cassian can't blame her, he's been hearing all the same little comments from a portion of his family. They always ask him when the wedding is, knowing full well he and Jyn are not engaged. Honestly, he feels like half of the reason they aren't married is out of spite. Fortunately Mateo is very dead set on building a sand octopus, so that manages to keep the comments at bay while Jyn scurries inside to take care of Luna.
They've got two tentacles finished by the time his not wife and daughter return, and he beams up at her when she takes a seat. "Maybe I like living in sin."
Mateo skips off down the sand to fill up his bucket with water. "Are you sure it was your mother and not my aunt? Lyra does not care." A beat. "At least she did not before. Did she find god all of a sudden?"
"Oh no, my mother was pushing about a wedding. The nerve of her, she and Papa eloped. It was your uncle that reminded me that Luna was not even baptized, before crossing himself like being in the room with us was a sin itself." She huffs, annoyed, shoving her hair back from her face.
Like she doesn't have enough to deal with! They both work, Mateo is just starting proper school, Luna is learning to walk.
"I know they're offended we aren't married but I don't care. The kids have our names, we share health insurance, we own a home, we have a joint bank account--" In addition to their own. "--why does a wedding have to happen? I wouldn't take your name anyway." She's the only Erso since Bodhi is a Rook and she likes her name. The kids will carry on Cassian's last name, as well as her own. Nothing will change if they marry except they'll have to spend money, which is disgusting.
"I think he crosses himself after almost every conversation. Shara and I used to wonder if he even realized he was doing it."
His uncle is probably the Worst of his very Catholic and very Mexican family.
Cassian pats a little more sand at the octopus, just as Mateo speed-walks his way back up, being very careful not to spill the water. "In the case of your mother, maybe she just wants to celebrate a wedding. Celebrate and be happy for you. That's all a wedding would be for us at this point, you are right."
It's not like they don't have money to spend on it, not even frivolously. But they're too busy with so many other things, a wedding is so far off his mind. "At least your mother is not tying to guilt trip about it."
Luna squirms in Jyn's arms, trying to back flip out of her arms since she's apparently decided that she's done eating. Jyn tucks her boob back into her bathing suit, releasing her daughter so she can crawl on the sand to her Papa. "Incoming, babe."
Luna is liable to wreck Mateo's masterpiece by accident.
She lounges back in the beach chair, closing her eyes. "They can celebrate us without a wedding. Send a card, tell me my family is cute as hell, Luna do not throw sand at Mama, donate a tree in our names. I don't... Do you want a wedding, Captain?"
Maybe he does and that's why everyone is bugging her about it.
you cannot separate passion from pathology

never go to a doctor whose office plants have died.

"Has he been having occasional hyperventilation or look like he's struggling to breathe?"

what i love most about my home is who i share it with.

Might as well if she's going to dump it all out!

Their First Official Dinner!
no subject
She looks up at him, content thought admittedly tired smile settling on her features. Their first official dinner in their first official apartment together with their first official baby. Everything is so perfect and wonderful and Jyn is very, very happy.
(And very, very tired.)
And blurting words out at random because she is so very, very tired. "Are you sure your mother likes me? I know your dad does because I talk shit about football with him and 'cause of that one time I put Kes in a headlock until he fainted, but your mom..." They're doing everything backwards! They're not married! She defiled Carina's precious baby boy.

And I am very happy."

you are the closest i will ever come to magic

Hi."

"I was wondering if we could talk about something." She chews on her bottom lip nervously, the anxiety clear behind her eyes. This is something important, something she is nervous about, but something necessary enough to preface it with requesting to talk.
no subject
"Of course, Jyn." She asked, she didn't even jump right into it, her usual modus operandi. He idly touches his fingertips against hers, in case she wants to take his hand. "Is everything okay?"
no subject
She passes it over and waits for Cassian to open it before she explains. "I'm late and I was feeling..." She shrugs. Gross basically. "I'd had those headaches, my stomach was all knotty, and god, my tits were so sore, felt like I'd run a marathon without a bra. So when we were at the grocery store I bought a test while you were getting the chicken and." Another shrug, a weak smile. "I'm pregnant, Cassian."

i'm afraid it's difficult to walk on the beach if you're strapped to a car seat
Luna's clamped on her hip, nursing while Jyn walks because she will start wailing for the sand the moment Jyn stops next to where Cassian and Mateo are playing so she has to walk and eat.
She actually keeps eating when Jyn stops, which prompts a faint, "oh, you're a hungry girl today" as Jyn settles into the beach chair next to her not husband, snagging her drink to swig some water back. "We have to baptize her so they'll get off my back for defiling you and living in sin. It was my mother this time. And she never pushes! Luna, do not bite Mama. That's not funny."
no subject
They've got two tentacles finished by the time his not wife and daughter return, and he beams up at her when she takes a seat. "Maybe I like living in sin."
Mateo skips off down the sand to fill up his bucket with water. "Are you sure it was your mother and not my aunt? Lyra does not care." A beat. "At least she did not before. Did she find god all of a sudden?"
no subject
Like she doesn't have enough to deal with! They both work, Mateo is just starting proper school, Luna is learning to walk.
"I know they're offended we aren't married but I don't care. The kids have our names, we share health insurance, we own a home, we have a joint bank account--" In addition to their own. "--why does a wedding have to happen? I wouldn't take your name anyway." She's the only Erso since Bodhi is a Rook and she likes her name. The kids will carry on Cassian's last name, as well as her own. Nothing will change if they marry except they'll have to spend money, which is disgusting.
no subject
His uncle is probably the Worst of his very Catholic and very Mexican family.
Cassian pats a little more sand at the octopus, just as Mateo speed-walks his way back up, being very careful not to spill the water. "In the case of your mother, maybe she just wants to celebrate a wedding. Celebrate and be happy for you. That's all a wedding would be for us at this point, you are right."
It's not like they don't have money to spend on it, not even frivolously. But they're too busy with so many other things, a wedding is so far off his mind. "At least your mother is not tying to guilt trip about it."
no subject
Luna is liable to wreck Mateo's masterpiece by accident.
She lounges back in the beach chair, closing her eyes. "They can celebrate us without a wedding. Send a card, tell me my family is cute as hell, Luna do not throw sand at Mama, donate a tree in our names. I don't... Do you want a wedding, Captain?"
Maybe he does and that's why everyone is bugging her about it.
