Luna zooms over right for the octopus, and Cassian intercepts his daughter like a football, hauling her up with a silly sound and a big fat smooch to her cheek, which delights her enough to save the octopus.
"Don't touch it, Luna!" Mateo huffs, ready to throw down with his baby sister for the sake of his art.
"They send us cards all the time," Cassian says, settling Luna in his lap. She seems content to be in the sand, digging her tiny fingers through it while her papa's stomach holds her upright. It's a great life.
"I don't know. One day, maybe," he admits. "It might make taxes easier. But I would definitely not want any kind of wedding than anyone else might want for us anyway. If or when we decide to get married, I only want it to be because we felt like it."
"Cassian, I would marry you in a second, tomorrow because the clerk's office is closed today, if that's what you want." She isn't opposed to being married to him, she's opposed to a wedding that won't be for them, and somewhere in the nagging the two could be separate concepts got entirely intertwined in spite.
"Mateo, mijo, come here and give Mama a kiss." She squints her eyes open to watch her son look at her, look at the octopus, affix Luna with a suspicious gaze, before he plods over to his mother, dropping into her lap and coating her with a layer of sand so she can curl her arms around him and kiss his cheek the same way his father just did with his baby sister. "I love you, starshine."
His stomach rolls over like he's fifteen and not forty when she tells him she would marry him, and he thinks maybe he does want to get married? But it's still one day. It can't possibly be any time soon, because no one in either of their families gets to take credit.
He's distracted by Mateo. Their grumpy son is just like his mother and Cassian adores him. They even have the same little pout.
Luna looks up at her papa and lifts her hands up at his face. "Oh, I am sorry for not paying attention to you," he says, ducking his head down to kiss the top of her head. She seems placated and goes back to punching the sand.
Fuck you sand.
"We should not talk about getting married where any of our relatives can hear us."
"If they eavesdrop they might not be invited," she mutters, still annoyed.
"Mama, you have to invite everybodies or nobodies at all," Mateo tells her, repeating the same thing she said to him when he only wanted to invite two kids from his pre-k class to his birthday party. "Otherwised it's no fair."
Defeated by a child.
"I know, mijo, that's the problem." It's not that she doesn't want to invite the entire huge family which she is sure is the majority of Mexico, it's just that she doesn't like parties and a wedding seems silly after they've been together for so long.
He laughs to himself at Jyn losing the argument to her son. She didn't even want all of Mateo's class to come, but it was the principle of trying to set a good example.
"We could always do a smaller ceremony, just us and our parents and siblings, then have a party later." He knows Jyn hates parties, and Cassian isn't exactly fond of them either, but he's built up a bigger immunity over the years of family get-togethers.
"Poe has to come too," Mateo says firmly.
Cassian grins, while Luna chatters presumably in agreement. Or maybe she's happy about the sand she's started piling on her papa's leg. "Don't worry, he would."
Mateo tucks his head under Jyn's chin and looks thoughtful for a second, but sees satisfied. He doesn't seem to care much where they go with family related things, as long as his cool big cousin Poe is there.
"Let's at lease get Luna baptized so they'll get off our backs for the time being." She ducks her head to give Mateo another smooch on the cheek before patting his leg. "Go finish your octopus honey, right now it's just bipedal."
"Okay."
Mateo doesn't move right away and Jyn is fine with having a lump in her lap for the time being, he is a very cute lump and she's fond of him, combing her fingers through his hair as he uses her as his personal lounge chair. Between him in her lap and Luna so cheerful and content in Cassian's, Jyn is feeling the ultimate in happiness with her little family.
"I suppose we should do that before she turns one." So like, time's running out. Another fact his family keeps reminding him of. Cassian, her birthday is coming up! Cassian, can you believe she's almost one? Hint hint.
He's very glad their son doesn't eschew affection, even if he's very dramatic about it - just like his mother. Sometimes Jyn and Mateo are so alike it's almost scary. He really wants to take a picture of them snuggled up in the chair (he's the worst with pictures, since the day Mateo was born), but his phone is too far away and there's a baby in his lap.
A baby who wriggles her little butt and skadoots out of the aforementioned lap, making a sudden crawling beeline towards the water because she has decided this is what she wants now.
She's fast, but not that fast, so Cassian is unconcerned when he laughs and climbs to his feet. "I guess we are going swimming now."
Jyn breathes out a laugh, nudging Mateo off her lap so she can also stand up. "Of course, honey, just be careful not to splash your sister once you get in the water."
"Okay!"
Their son darts off down the sand, quickly overtaking his crawling sister who seems all the more determined to follow even if her crawling is hampered by the slippery sand, and Jyn moves to take Cassian's hand so they can follow their circus.
Mateo reaches the water first, and Cassian reaches his daughter easily, matching her pace as she shrieks when her brother splashes into the surf.
He looks over at Jyn when she takes his hand and smiles at her. It's impossible not to smile at her most of the time, especially with the words that follow.
"I do not seem to recall you ever asking either." Who says it has to be him!! Other than most of his family implying he's got to get a move on, not Jyn. "I would marry you too, many times over. I already feel married to you in everything else." Who needs a courthouse document?? Only the IRS, he supposes. "If you can wait until we are home again, I can dramatically get down on one knee to do it all properly and everything."
Splash, splash. Mateo doesn't go far and Jyn can see when the nerves hit him, stopping when the little waves start lapping at this belly. He won't go any deeper than that without one of his parents and she's forever grateful that their bold, curious baby has good sense.
Luna on the other hand has the baby sense of immortality because she doesn't know any better. She's going to be a handful.
"Why do I have to wait until we're home?" Not that she cares about the down on one knee thing, she's just playacting at the impatience that conventional wisdom says she should feel. She is not impatient to get married because Cassian hit the nail on the head -- they're already married in every way but a stupid piece of paper.
Mateo is a very smart boy. Cassian likes to think it comes from both of them and their unreasonable skill at perception and sensibility. Luna is another story, and he wonders if it's because they were a little more lax. Everything just felt easier with a second baby than the first!
"Because I refuse to even think about getting engaged when our entire family is around for it."
And also he has a ring at home. He's had it since Mateo turned one, which is a long time, but Cassian likes to be prepared. He wasn't even thinking about asking her - he just saw the ring one day in its simplicity and thought Jyn would like it, if they ever decided to get married.
They get close to the water and Cassian leans over to scoop Luna up before she can dive face first into the shallows. She bleats out her unhappiness, how dare you papa! "We are going in, don't worry Lunita. You have to master walking before you can master swimming."
"You don't have to make a show of it in front of every, but you could ask."
She's just saying, even if she sounds distracted. Like she's just saying it to say it. She doesn't care if he proposes or not because she knows it's going to happen eventually, one day, and she doesn't need a big production. Everything she needs it right in front of her: a cautious, considerate boy who loves books and stars and pretending; a precocious baby girl who thinks the universe will bend to her will if she tries hard enough; a beautiful, wonderful man who listens to her argue with the news, brings her breakfast in bed just because, and is always on her team.
Cassian likes plans and he knows she doesn't actually care about the how, but he still wants to make it kind of relevant to her interests. Even if he just rolls over and asks her in bed. She eats her food too fast to hide the ring in any food, so any of the classic traditions are long out the window.
They don't need to get married; he has everything he never knew he wanted in his perfect family. Jyn is the love of his life with or without documentation. But... one day. When the time feels right.
They wade out till the water is at his knees, bringing them closer to Mateo, and Cassian holds Luna so her feet dangle at the top of it. She immediately bursts into giggles and kicks her legs, sending off tiny splashes of delight. "What strong legs, mija!"

Now... it is a race. Gotta propose before she does, Cassian! What a monster.
She drifts over to Mateo, taking his outstretched hand and it's as if the sudden tether makes him bold as anything because suddenly he is jumping with the little waves and ducking down until only his head bobs on the surface.
She probably won't. It's now a challenge. He guesses that means she should do it almost as soon as they're back home then. Maybe she won't expect it that quick!
Luna looks over at the sound of her name, not necessarily from the command, but she giggles even harder at the sight of her brother nearly submerged in water.
Cassian gasps. "What! Where did he go? Should we try to find him?"
She laughs again while Cassian dips her down to the waist in the waves, and he's careful as he glides her through the water toward she brother. She shrieks and wriggles in excitement, but his grip is iron on his baby. "She might catch you, Mateo. Watch out!"
She won't forget, but she definitely won't be expecting it right away, because she doesn't expect him to already have the supplies ready, namely a ring. She doesn't really need a proposal, she knows they're it, end of the line, but
I could be nice.
She laughs at her precious family's antics, grinning as Mateo leaps from the water and showers them all in a fine spray of water droplets, making his sister shriek in delight, whole little body jerking and jumping in wonder. Object permanence is a hell of a thing.
"You found me! Mama, Luna found me."
Jyn laughs softly. "I can see that, she's a very good detective, you two will have to be partners."
He's going to start carrying around the ring at all times now, just in case the opportunity strikes. He is weirdly into the idea of planning a neat and perfect proposal for her now.
Luna can't stop giggling, flapping her arms like she can escape her papa's grip and divebomb her brother. When that fails she just stretches her arms out with a little grunt, how dare her papa continue to restrain her when all she wants is to attack her own flesh and blood?
"Do you want to try going entirely under, Mateo? You could really hide from her then. Mama will not let go of your hand."
He looks a little nervous, but squeezes Jyn's hand with sudden determination. "If we are gonna be dete- deketives, she should learn how to find me anywheres. You promise not to let go, mama?"
"I promise, starshine." She laces their fingers together as if to affirm her promise. She will never ever let her baby boy go and she does really understand how much her parents love her brother now that she has her own perfect, precious son to be obsessed with.
She loves Luna more than anything, but Mateo is her first born. She doesn't love him more or less than his sister and she doesn't play favorites with her children, but she has known and loved Mateo longer and that is just a fact.
"I've got you."
Mateo nods, screwing up his face in resolve, grip tightening on Jyn's hand. He sucks in a huge breath that pushes his tiny belly out and ducks under the water with his eyes squeezed shut. Jyn really hopes he remembers to breathe out of his nose like they've been practicing in the tub but since his hand is staying stationary in hers, she doesn't think he's in distress.
He bursts out of the water a few moments later with a huge gasp as if he'd been holding his breath for six minutes, not sixteen seconds. "I did it!"
He never ever gets tired of watching Jyn and Mateo, not since the day he was born and the way she cradled him so loving despite the fear they were both fighting about this new child of theirs. He may not be her exact mini-me physically, but he is in personality. And he's glad they've managed to instill a sense of trust in him for both his parents.
As soon as Mateo drops under, Luna stills and startles, cooing softly in confusion. She looks up at Cassian and bleats, because what the heck papa! Where is her brother! She goes back to staring right where Mateo disappeared and whines.
"Glowbug! Did the ocean get him? You better save him quick, mi vida." She just sort of whines again, kicking her legs in concern.
When Mateo pops back up, Luna yelps, the sound turning into wild laughter as she jiggles in delight. She nearly backflips out of Cassian's arms in relief, saved only when he scoops her into his stomach and shakes his head.
"Me vista?" His father has already complimented his good work and Mateo is still thirsty for approval from the coolest man he knows and honestly Jyn completely understands, she is the same way when it comes to Cassian.
(They are painfully alike and Jyn cannot see it.)
"We did, love. You were so good at hiding. Luna couldn't find you at all." Jyn ducks down to kiss Mateo's salty hair, but he squirms away, creeping over to Cassian and his sister, letting go of his mother's hand once his fingers curl around Cassian's shorts and Mateo feels Safe. "Did you see me, Papa?"
Jyn feels like her heart is going to explode from love.
He'd take Mateo's hand, but he's pretty sure lifting Luna from the water would result in more wailing than any of them want to deal with. Instead he mimics Jyn and kisses the top of Mateo's head. "I watched you go under, but you were hiding so well I was not sure where you went! You fooled us both. It was very good. And you were under for so long!"
Mateo beams and ducks his head into Cassian's shorts, hiding his face just like his mama does sometimes.
Luna, however, takes advantage of how close her brother finally is and reaches out, bopping him on the head with a giggle.
"Luna!!" Mateo whines, jerking away without letting go of his father's shorts.
Cassian sighs and turns her away. "No," he says sternly and she just bleats at him.
Luna seems to think nothing of her scolding and to nip the look on Mateo's face in the bud before he can start wailing, Jyn reaches out to take her from Cassian's arm. Tucked on her Mama's hip her toes still touch the water but she is out of reach of her brother and he is out of reach of her hitty hands.
"Hands are for hugging, Luna, not for hitting. We're gentle with our friends." Gently, she smooths her fingers down the back of the baby's hand until Luna does the same thing in return. "Si, mija, gentle."
Jyn looks at her pouting son. She wants to explain that his baby sister doesn't know any better yet, but she doesn't want to erase that he got whacked by a nine-month-old either. She decides to let him bring it up if he wants, carrying on instead. "Do you want to try going under with your Papa now?"
It's natural to move towards Jyn the moment he realizes she's coming in for Luna; they've been a partnership for longer than they've been parents, they're always in tune with one another that way. Once he realizes his father's hands are free, Mateo lets go of the shorts and reaches for Cassian's hand, still pouting. With his now free hand, Cassian runs his fingers through his son's messy hair and then ducks down to be more eye level.
The water is deep to Mateo, but even kneeling it barely brushes Cassian's stomach. "I will be right here. Maybe we can break your last record. And then maybe in a few minutes, we can go out a little further?"
He'll carry him, of course. Mateo does not like not having his arms around someone's neck when his little feet can't touch the sand.
Slowly, tentatively, Mateo nods his head, still looking like a grumpy octopus. It is the exact same unhappy frown Jyn gets when she's grumpy. "But I don't wanna be Luna's partner right now. She hurt me."
"You do not have to be," Cassian says gently, still trying to head off those wails. "It is okay to be upset. Just because Luna is too little to understand what she has done is wrong, it does not mean you need to ignore that she hurt you and hurt your feelings. She is still learning all the things you have gotten so good at."
"Okay." He pauses for a long five seconds, then looks over at Jyn. "Mama, will you keep Luna over there?"
Jyn is never more in love with her future husband than she is when she watches him interact with their children, especially Mateo since he can carry on a conversation now. He's so good with the both of them!
"Yes, starshine, I will keep her over here. We'll just watch." Luna bleats an unhappy sound, kicking her legs on Jyn's hip, but Jyn doesn't move to dip her in the water again, simply rubs her back soothingly until the baby drops her head against her Mama's shoulder.
She probably needs to go down for a nap, but it's too crowded inside so she'll have to settle for sleeping in Jyn's arms.
"You're being very brave today, Mateo. Mama and Papa are so proud of you."
Mateo regards his sister suspiciously, as if even though she is still a baby, even though both of his parents have reassured him she will be kept away from him, she's still going to take a flying leap and gnaw on his skull. It's a fair concern, Luna is a biter.
He wriggles his little butt in the water like he's hyping himself up, but Jyn's note on his bravery seems to get him over the fear of his sister striking. "Mama, I want you to counts how long!"
He barely waits for her reply before he puffs in a deep breath and ducks back under the water. Cassian looks up at his future wife with a very fond smile while his son's little fingers clutch at his hand for dear life, and he is ridiculously happy. "I suppose if she falls asleep, Mateo can finish his octopus in peace."

"Don't touch it, Luna!" Mateo huffs, ready to throw down with his baby sister for the sake of his art.
