In all honesty, Jyn should have texted him sooner but she'd forgotten to do so until she and Bodhi were only a few minutes out of town. Really she forgets until Bodhi nudges her awake in the car and reminds her to text him that she's on the way. Not because it's not her house, he assures her, but because she said she would after they got dinner.
(The ended up getting Taco Bell and eating in the car but that counts.)
Bodhi swings by the Sonic in town and she grabs a soda and a hot dog because she's still hungry and she's still eating it when he pulls up in front of the farmhouse and dumps her bags out of the car. He offers to bring them inside for her, but Jyn shakes him off, thanking him profusely for picking her up and promising she'll come by in the next couple of days for the fruit pizza he's been teasing her with for weeks. She drops the bags on the porch and lets herself in to her house, smiling at the sounds of movement inside. She's never come home to someone waiting for her.
Hot dog and drink still in hand, she nudges the door open and slips through, kicking it shut behind her.
He hears the door open in the midst of strategizing the best way to get the sneaker from his daughter without setting her off, and two seconds later Jyn's voice fills the house.
I'm home!
His stomach rolls over like he's a fucking teenager, as though he isn't having a staredown with his nearly fifteen month old child. Jyn is home. He feels giddy, which is stupid. But she's been gone for what feels like forever, which is also stupid because he'd gone years without seeing her before. Sofia looks towards the sound, eyebrows scrunched in vague recognition, but her grip tightens on the shoe like it's a trick, using Jyn's voice to lure her away from her new favorite thing.
He wants to scoop Sofia up and bolt into the living room, but his hands are still full of dirty dishes, so he hurries to the sink and comes up with a halfway plan as he does. He's definitely luring someone, but it's not his baby. "We are in the kitchen!"
She looks at her father when he calls out, then looks back out in Jyn's vague direction. She bleats out a questioning sound and smacks the shoelace against the chair again.
He beams at her, letting his face light up in the excitement he feels. "Do you know who that is, mija? Should we go say hello?"
Jyn doesn't need to be told twice, toeing off her converse and kicking them toward the closet before she ambles through her house, navigating between baby junk and furniture until she winds up in the kitchen. She steps through the threshold and sees little Sofia sitting on the floor and it's like her heart explodes. The plastic cup of soda makes a crackling noise as her fingers tighten against it. She's never come home to anyone, not like this, not since Saw, and it is the best thing she has ever felt in her entire life.
She leans against the doorframe, trying for casual and gesturing idly with the half eaten hot dog. "Well hi, fancy meeting you here."
It's as casual as she can manage with an enormous grin lighting up her expression. This is truly the happiest of clams, right here. She would have come home so much more often if this was waiting for her. Immediately she knows going back to work is going to be so much harder now that she has gotten a taste of the homecoming.
Cassian looks kind of starstruck when Jyn comes into the kitchen, even if she's just leaning cool and casual against the door frame with a hot dog in hand. It is hands down one of the best things he's seen? She came home, to him, to Sofia, and her face looks as thrilled as his.
"Hi," he gets out, stumbling over what kind of verbal welcome to give her. "Someone broke in to your house."
Sofia has her own ideas. She shrieks a laugh once her brain realizes it's Jyn standing in the doorway, and she gleefully abandons the shoe, using the chair to pull herself up and stomp her little feet all the way over. She grabs at Jyn's pants and smacks her leg, laughing while she does a weird little squat dance in her delight at being in Jyn's presence again.
Cassian's heart basically dissolves, but it's fine, he's fine. His two favorite people in the world, help him. He'll go over to greet her for real in a second, but his baby is dancing with his girlfriend and that's pretty great.
Jyn's hands are full! Quickly, she shoves the last of the hot dog in her mouth, looking like a chipmunk, so she can bend down and scoop Sofia right off her feet with one arm, sweeping her up into her arms before she takes the couple steps forward to set her drink on the table. Immediately her arm curls around the little girl, ducking her head to press kisses across her face.
"Oh I missed you so much, my little whale. You've gotten so big!" Whatever else she murmurs to the baby is muffled against soft baby skin as Jyn buries her face against Sofia's neck, holding her tight and breathing in that baby scent of soap and powder.
He wishes he could have recorded the sight, but Jyn shoving the hot dog in her mouth will just have to exist in memory. Watching the way she completely drowns Sofia in affection and love finally manages to kick him into more of a reaction than staring at her, at least.
Sofia giggles recklessly, winding her tiny hands into Jyn's shirt. "Whale!" she repeats, because that is her hello today.
Cassian comes over after shaking himself out of all that distraction, tucking his hand at Jyn's back so she knows he's there. And... leaving it there, because he's missed her and he wants to hug her, but Sofia is too busy wriggling her feet around and basking in the attention. "She has missed you too," he says softly, and the baby tilts her head just enough to glance at her papa before mimicking Jyn and hiding her little face against her shoulder.
Cassian is hesitating because of the baby but Jyn refuses to accept that, shifting Sofia to her hip and clamping down on her legs so she can't kick her father in the junk when Jyn turns to bury her face against his chest, winding her free arm around his waist and pulling him closer to her.
Sofia doesn't mind her papa being so close honestly.
"I missed you," Jyn murmurs, feeling some weird tightness in her chest, some tickle in her nose like she's going to cry but that's stupid because she's happy to be home, she's happy to be with Cassian and Sofia.
Oh. Oh no. Jyn tugs him in and his arms instantly weave around both of them in the best kind of hug he can offer with a baby sandwiched in tight.
"I missed you too," he says, and she can probably hear the wide smile creeping onto his face. She missed him. Sofia chirrups somewhere between them, and Cassian tilts his head enough to kiss Jyn softly on the head, since her face is buried and he can't kiss her for real yet. He lingers with his lips in her hair, because he really did miss her and he is basking in the ability to hold them both again.
She's back. This is their house now, not just hers, and they get to be here, together. All three of them. It's kind of baffling, but in all the best ways. "Welcome home, Jyn."
"You're gonna make me cry," Jyn grouses, mostly teasing but the tickle is still tickling her nose so maybe he will actually make her cry if he keeps being all sentimental and gross like this.
Welcome home, indeed. She feels home.
Her chin tips up and he's so close she barely has to push up on her tiptoes to kiss him, soft and gentle for a moment before she pushes up higher and the kiss immediately becomes more determined and insistent. She's not going to make out with him with Sofia in her arms, but god she missed him so much.
"Maybe that was my intention," he mutters teasingly. It was not, but he does take it as a sign she's happy to be back, as if none of the other indicators were clear.
When she leans up to kiss him, he immediately returns it, and it is only the baby wriggling against him that stops him from trying to take it further. Even so, he's just as insistent about it, pouring back how much he's missed her too against her lips.
Sofia idly paps at both of them on the chest, unbothered by the kissing but casually reminding them she exists. Or maybe she just likes to touch people, this is her version of more affection.
Jyn's cheeks are flushed and she's grinning again when she sinks back down again. She never wants to stop kissing him but she also wants to snuggle in bed with Sofia watching football on TV with someone else who calls it football.
She will never forgive Leia for calling it soccer. Full offense.
But reminded by Sofia of her wonderful presence and seemingly satisfied with that kiss for now, Jyn turns her attention back to the tiny child in her arms, dropping a kiss on her forehead. "Sof, do you want to see something really neat?"
Without waiting for an answer (which is probably "NO!" because children are just like that), she unwinds her arm from Cassian's waist and shifts Sofia so she can push the sleeve of her long sleeve shirt up, revealing tan skin and at the crook of her elbow, a small, brightly colored tattoo. It's not her first tattoo, she's gotten a handful over the years, small, black and white reminders of her family, but it's the only one in color and the only one that will be visible when she's wearing normal clothes, not hidden away out of sight. "What's this, Sof?"
There will be more time for that later, because she is back. More kisses, more lounging, more everything again, because they are in the same house. They don't have to drive over, pack up infinite baby things.
Cassian still has his hands on Jyn, her waist and back, because he doesn't want to stop touching her even if the kiss has broken off for now. Sofia's attention is drawn just like his own as she rolls up her sleeve, and Cassian stares down at the brightly colored whale now decorating her arm.
"Whale!" she giggles, reaching out to touch it with her tiny fingers. She runs them over it, poking and rubbing at the shape of the whale on Jyn's skin, trying to figure out why it's stuck there. "Ballena! Ballena!"
Jyn has a new tattoo and it's a whale, and there is literally no way she got this for any other reason besides his daughter, and Cassian doesn't know what to do with that. "You got a whale," he says, softly and maybe a little surprised.
"Yes, it's a whale, love. It's a picture." That seems the best way to explain why it's flat on her arm and not swimming about in the ocean like whales should do. Sofia looks so excited to explore the whale that Jyn just lets her have at it, holding her arm out for the little girl.
She looks up at Cassian again, nibbling on her bottom lip. "Yeah. It seemed... right." But maybe it was too much, maybe she should have listened to her anxious brain and gotten anything else or nothing at all instead but there's no turning back now. She can always wear long sleeves if he hates it.
Sofia is sufficiently distracted by the whale, and Cassian would be too if his gaze didn't rise up to meet hers. She looks awkward and unsure and he wants that to go away.
He smiles at her, a little shyly. She got a whale tattoo, because of Sofia. All her tattoos connect to her family, it's not hard to make that connection. One year ago he was alone in a tiny apartment with an infant, and now he is living with Jyn in a unit that has a real sense of... permanence. She literally got a representation of that inked onto her body, in a much more visible place than the others.
"It does," he tries. "She clearly loves it."
But it's not entirely about Sofia, so he leans in and kisses her cheek. His smile widens. "I like it too."
Sofia is still patting her arm idly and babbling whale under her breath and it makes Jyn's heart melt, even more so when Cassian tells her he likes it. No offense to Sofia, but Cassian's opinion matters than hers right now.
Mostly because Sofia's opinion is so easily swayed.
"I love her." Maybe, probably even him but that idea is too much to handle so she doesn't even think about it. Tries not to think about it. Thinks about it all the time.
She is so completely enamored by the whale that Cassian files it away as a distraction to use another time if necessary. Baby being difficult?? Whip out the magic arm whale.
His heart sort of stutters for a second when Jyn says she loves Sofia. On one hand, it makes sense, because she's a baby and it's very difficult to not feel some kind of affection for them. On the other, Jyn loves his daughter. Enough to say so aloud.
"She knows it, and she loves you too. I know she does."
Sofia adores Jyn, she has from nearly the start. The first week or so after she was gone, her absence was very much noticed by both Andors. But hearing Jyn say she loves his daughter makes him feel a little bit more in love with her too.
It's a lot, it's so much, especially for Jyn who finds herself ill equipped to feel or process or confess love even on the best days -- Bodhi tries to get it out of her all the time but the most she can manage is "you too" in response to his "I love you".
But it's easier with Sofia, who loves without condition, who always clambered into Jyn's lap when she felt shitty like she knew something was wrong. Tiny baby hands trying to pat Jyn's cheeks into a smile.
The smile she offers Cassian is weak, mildly confused (because how does one accept love, even from a baby) but grateful she isn't being rejected by either of them and she looks down at Sofia again, interrupting her whale watching to lift her hand and smooth her dark hair back. She presses a kiss to the top of her head.
It is very much a comfort just knowing that Sofia loves him no matter what. Both because there is someone who will always love him and because he must be doing something right if she can be such a loving baby.
Sofia blinks at Jyn. "Llama?" She recognizes that word!
Jyn's smile is a little weak, and it makes him think he should reign in a little of his own very bright feelings in worry he will overwhelm her? He can't turn them off, but he does bite his cheek to stop his smile from continuing to widen.
"A toy," Jyn clarifies, breathing out into a smile as she looks back up at Cassian, some of the nerves having faded. "It's in my bag. On the porch. And now I regret not letting Bodhi bring them inside."
But she wanted her private reunion and Bodhi had already done too much picking her up at the airport. Now she is just going to have to suffer with going to get them. She sets Sofia down and orients her toward the door. "Sofia, your llama is at the door. Do you want to go help us let him in?"
Sofia streaks off with her stompy toddler march and Jyn laughs again as she reaches over to grab Cassian's hand. "Come on, you heard the girl."
He can't help the laugh that follows Sofia's tromping over the floor. He squeezes Jyn's hand and tugs her along. "Follow the leader with a toddler can be exhausting, I am not sure you really want to start a game of it right now."
Sofia has reached the door by the time they get there too, and she's reaching up very determinedly for the doorknob which is very much out of reach. "Llama! Llama!" Excuse you, parents, where is this llama?
Cassian scoops her up with one arm, because he doesn't want to let go of Jyn's hand, and together he helps her open up the door where Jyn's bags await. She wriggles around in his arm, bucking against her papa, and he sets her back down. "All right, all right! Calm down, mija."
Sofia lunges for Jyn's bags, but she doesn't know how to work any of the zippers or buckles, so she just starts tugging idly on straps and patting at the outsides. "No llama!"
"Si, llama. Uno momento, ballenacita. Sé quieta." Sofia doesn't stay still at all, rustling the bag like a piglet snuffling around for truffles. Jyn reluctantly releases Cassian's hand in order to stoop down and unzip the bag for the little girl. She doesn't unearth the llama for her though, letting Sofia dive in and continue snuffling around for her present.
Stepping back, she moves back to Cassian, taking his hand again while Sofia pulls out clothes and one hiking boot and scarves and blankets and a notebook that spills open with letters and pictures falling out over the porch, all to find her llama. Jyn doesn't seem to mind, though she does lean down to pick up one of the pictures and pass it to Cassian.
It's their prom picture and she looks at it fondly. "Look at us. Your stupid tie matches my dress."
She does not stay still or quiet, chirping back another "No!" while she practically vibrates at the suitcase. She digs and tosses and Cassian sighs, because his daughter is always messy. Determined, but messy.
Jyn picks up the picture, and he can't help the smile that beams onto his face when he sees it. "I was so proud of finding one that matched! I think abuelita still has it."
They look so young and it feels like ages ago, yet here they are now, back on her front porch holding hands. He looks at her and his smile turns into more of a grin. "You carried this with you?"
"I carried a bunch," Jyn corrects, stooping down to gather the rest up. Cassian and his grandmother when he made captain, their crew at graduation, Saw and Steela, Lyra and Galen on some research trip somewhere -- Jyn's dark hair barely visible peeking out behind Galen's head indicating she is in the backpack carrier, her and Bodhi as children hugging each other or trying to put each other in a headlock, a picture of Cassian and Sofia sleeping on her couch. "But yeah, I brought it with me."
Her fingers squeeze his hand. "We've gone up a lot of mountains together."
He gets little flashes of the photos as she collects them, and he wants to take a closer look at them all, but he supposes there will be more time when his baby isn't making a mess. He thinks he spies one more recent, one of him and Sofia, and it makes him feel warm.
Cassian squeezes her hand back, smiling softly at her. She took him with her, up mountains. Her literal dream job. "One day we will go up a mountain together for real."
Sofia shrieks with delight and yanks out her prize at last. "Llama!"
Cassian sighs fondly as she runs her tiny fingers over it, sitting down with a thumb on the porch. She has her toy, she doesn't care about what else came out of the suitcase. "At least she is not saying no."
Her attention is drawn quickly to Sofia, happily inspecting her new friend, sitting on one of Jyn's bras. It's the cutest image Jyn could imagine, bra included.
She looks back up at Cassian, looking just incredibly lovestruck. "I'm glad you were here for me to come home to."
