"I can if we stop by the farmhouse so I can change first." Walk of (no) shame is one thing if she's only going from his house to hers in last night's dress, but she can't be tromping around town all day in last night's dress.
Not in part because she 'disposed' of her tights already so she'll be cold.
She is happy to stay with him all day though. Maybe it will be different in the light of day, but he's her best friend (again), she just wants to make up for all that lost time. And maybe make out a little too.
Oh. Right. He literally just offered her his shirt to sleep again, but she doesn't have another set of real clothes and she Mysteriously Lost her tights. He almost offers her a jacket to borrow too because he knows she likes to keep warm, but there's no reason they can't stop there. Maybe she could pick up other things, if she wants to stay again another night.
"We can easily swing by." Driving around in his car, that's an old familiar song too.
"If there is not a game, we can always watch a movie. I just want to keep hanging out with you today."
"Alright, yeah. Maybe both, a game and a movie once Sof is asleep." She scoops up said baby again once she's pulled on Cassian's sweats, wondering if she can beg a long sleeve shirt off him too. Maybe in a little bit so he won't tease her for her aversion to the cold.
Luckily the baby is toasty warm in her footie pajamas.
"Come on, princesa, Papa is going to make breakfast." Sofia bleats happily and jumps up and down in Jyn's arms, it's very exciting times this morning. New friend to play with, new pillows to get tossed into, second breakfast??? This is all incredible.
He still can't believe how easy this is. How nice it is to have the whole day ahead of him with Jyn and his baby.
Once Jyn is out of bed, he ducks in and plants another kiss on top of her head, then Sofia's head. "There is an extra hoodie abandoned in the kitchen if you need it, but please do not steal that one too. I never know when one is going to end up covered with spit up."
Two of everything has been a godsend, but he knows Jyn will be cold sooner rather than later. "I am still glad you are here," he says, moving towards the kitchen at last. He can't linger in here anymore, they're all gonna get hungry soon. "Coffee? Tea?"
He only started keeping tea in the house since she's been around for so long if he's honest. He has a few of her favorites.
It's her hoodie now, he never stood a chance. It's manifest destiny! She'll buy him a hoodie for Christmas so it's fine!
"Tea, please." She may have adapted to coffee, but it's still disgusting and she knows Cassian doesn't have all the flavor addings to make it palatable for her. She ducks her head to kiss Sofia's cheek as she follows to the kitchen. "One day, mija, I will teach you to brew a proper cup of tea. Never put the milk in first. Your Papa did it once when we were in school and I dumped it out the window."
She would have dumped it in his lap but it was hot and that would be rude.
She can't keep stealing all his hoodies!! Especially in the winter, he's going to be cold! Also she can't steal the ones that Sofia likes to snuggle against the most, that's just going to be a rule.
Cassian assumed it would be tea, which is why he barely waits for her to answer before he moves over and sets up the kettle when they get into the kitchen, then sets up the coffee pot for himself. He pauses very briefly when he hears Jyn call Sofia mija, trying to pretend it doesn't send a flutter through his chest. He can't put that image in his head, not so soon.
"It is not my fault abuelita never kept tea in the house." He turns around to shoot them both a smile. "I have since learned. But I suppose it is best that she learns from an expert."
He likes the sound of that, of Jyn being around when Sofia is old enough to make tea.
"Don't worry, Sofia, he will not make that mistake again." It's intoned almost like a threat, but her smile can be heard in the words. She's too content this morning to make decent threats.
"What's her middle name, if she's got one? I realized I've never asked."
It's not like Jyn asked to see her birth certificate and it's never come up naturally until right now. She's full-named Sofia's father enough though that it should have come up before now but. Alas.
She drops down at the table, letting Sofia stand on the table with a laugh. "Shh, shh, don't let your Papa know I'm spoiling you."
"It is not like she lets me make the tea when we are in the same room regardless." He appreciates that they are talking at Sofia like she can understand anything they're saying. As it stands, her eyes occasionally just bounce back and forth between voices.
He digs out the pancakes mix and the flat pan, setting it up while Jyn plays with his baby and everything! Is great!
"She has two, since she has only one last name. Sofia Inez Carina." After his mother and grandmother, of course. He'd asked Marisol if she wanted the baby to have her last name too, but she didn't care, didn't really think it was necessary since she was relinquishing all rights anyway. He looks over and beams at the sight, even if he really should say something about babies on tables. "I already spoil her plenty, it's a problem."
Jyn mock gasps, kissing Sofia's cheeks quickly. "What a lucky, lucky girl, to be named after your abeula and bisabuela. Sofia Inez Carina, a beautiful name for a beautiful girl." The baby jumps at hearing her name, seeming happy to be addressed and complimented.
"I wish I had met her, your mum." It's a sentiment that she has offered more than once before in the long time they have known each other. She'd met neither of Cassian's parents and he'd never had the chance to meet Lyra. They didn't have a lot of motherly influences in their lives, excepting his abuelia, of course. She did her best for all of them.
"Did you... did you ever look in on my dad?" She doesn't think her father would have known about Sofia and not told her but they'd been estranged for so long it doesn't seem likely either that he would have even known she and Cassian were ever a thing. Galen had only found his way to town long after Jyn had fled to college and then Peru. Their correspondence at the end had been via email but Jyn didn't bring up her high school love.
But Cassian was a nice human being, maybe he visited Bodhi while he was tending to their father.
He beams every time Jyn interacts with his daughter, how gleefully and brightly and how she makes her smile. "I thought it was cliche, but abuelita almost cried when I told her I was adding Inez."
His smile softens when she brings up his mother, not for the first time. He wishes Jyn could have met her too. He's thought about her a lot since Sofia was born, even though he's lived the majority of his life without her. At least Sofia won't know what she might be missing.
He's stirring up the pancakes, listening to his baby chatter away in the background. "Never so directly. I asked Bodhi how he was doing once in a while, but I felt too strange trying to speak to him myself." He didn't know how much Galen might have known about him, if anything. Both his children were estranged, Jyn much more so.
"I never told him about you. It was already strange enough and I'd tried so hard to run away from you..." She shrugs, sighing softly, and leaning in to kiss Sofia's cheek again like dropping affection on the baby will make up for her own lack of affection as a child.
"Mama would have loved you." That is directed at Cassian, easy enough to recognize when her tone lightens again as she speaks to Sofia. "And she would have loved you, ballenacita. But that isn't hard because you're so lovable. Just like your Papa. You know Sof, I almost used you as an excuse to run away last night. I know it was terribly rude of me to use you that way, but your Papa talked me out of it because he's very smart and even though it's been something like a decade he still knows me better than anyone on the planet. One day Leia and Han will have a baby and you will have a best friend just like me and your Papa. No matter how far apart or how long it's been, you'll always fit. And you will be the luckiest girl in the world."
He gets a soft smile on his face when she tells him Lyra would have loved him, grateful he's currently turned away making those pancakes.
The smile softens even more as she talks to him through talking to his baby, and it isn't really a surprise that she wanted to run last night. He could tell the moment he walked back in the room. He's got a lot of friends in this town, and his grandmother, but none of them talk so candidly well about him like Jyn does. No one ever did.
It really is kind of overwhelming to have her back, in whatever form that takes.
Pancakes successfully frying up, he takes a minute to walk over to the table, to lean down and plant a gentle kiss to Jyn's forehead. "I think I am very lucky too."
Jyn hums a happy little noise, without realizing, when he kisses her, wriggling Sofia on the table until the baby lets out a peal of delighted laughter, dissolving in baby giggles. It's an incredible sound and one Jyn doesn't think she will get tired off, repeating the action to the same shriek of happy laughter.
"Yeah, babe, you are incredibly lucky. Look at this girl."
She's not even being avoident this time, she is simply a dense motherfucker.
She missed it, and he knows she's not being obtuse on purpose. It's what gets him to be a little extra honest, hoping it's not too much. He's just so glad Jyn has stuck around as long as she has, and he knows Sofia is taken with her just as much as he is.
"Lucky you found your way back. Sofia and I are both in good fortune to have you here."
She shrieks, as if to signify her agreement, even though it's probably just because she heard her name.
