"It is not like she lets me make the tea when we are in the same room regardless." He appreciates that they are talking at Sofia like she can understand anything they're saying. As it stands, her eyes occasionally just bounce back and forth between voices.
He digs out the pancakes mix and the flat pan, setting it up while Jyn plays with his baby and everything! Is great!
"She has two, since she has only one last name. Sofia Inez Carina." After his mother and grandmother, of course. He'd asked Marisol if she wanted the baby to have her last name too, but she didn't care, didn't really think it was necessary since she was relinquishing all rights anyway. He looks over and beams at the sight, even if he really should say something about babies on tables. "I already spoil her plenty, it's a problem."
Jyn mock gasps, kissing Sofia's cheeks quickly. "What a lucky, lucky girl, to be named after your abeula and bisabuela. Sofia Inez Carina, a beautiful name for a beautiful girl." The baby jumps at hearing her name, seeming happy to be addressed and complimented.
"I wish I had met her, your mum." It's a sentiment that she has offered more than once before in the long time they have known each other. She'd met neither of Cassian's parents and he'd never had the chance to meet Lyra. They didn't have a lot of motherly influences in their lives, excepting his abuelia, of course. She did her best for all of them.
"Did you... did you ever look in on my dad?" She doesn't think her father would have known about Sofia and not told her but they'd been estranged for so long it doesn't seem likely either that he would have even known she and Cassian were ever a thing. Galen had only found his way to town long after Jyn had fled to college and then Peru. Their correspondence at the end had been via email but Jyn didn't bring up her high school love.
But Cassian was a nice human being, maybe he visited Bodhi while he was tending to their father.
He beams every time Jyn interacts with his daughter, how gleefully and brightly and how she makes her smile. "I thought it was cliche, but abuelita almost cried when I told her I was adding Inez."
His smile softens when she brings up his mother, not for the first time. He wishes Jyn could have met her too. He's thought about her a lot since Sofia was born, even though he's lived the majority of his life without her. At least Sofia won't know what she might be missing.
He's stirring up the pancakes, listening to his baby chatter away in the background. "Never so directly. I asked Bodhi how he was doing once in a while, but I felt too strange trying to speak to him myself." He didn't know how much Galen might have known about him, if anything. Both his children were estranged, Jyn much more so.
"I never told him about you. It was already strange enough and I'd tried so hard to run away from you..." She shrugs, sighing softly, and leaning in to kiss Sofia's cheek again like dropping affection on the baby will make up for her own lack of affection as a child.
"Mama would have loved you." That is directed at Cassian, easy enough to recognize when her tone lightens again as she speaks to Sofia. "And she would have loved you, ballenacita. But that isn't hard because you're so lovable. Just like your Papa. You know Sof, I almost used you as an excuse to run away last night. I know it was terribly rude of me to use you that way, but your Papa talked me out of it because he's very smart and even though it's been something like a decade he still knows me better than anyone on the planet. One day Leia and Han will have a baby and you will have a best friend just like me and your Papa. No matter how far apart or how long it's been, you'll always fit. And you will be the luckiest girl in the world."
He gets a soft smile on his face when she tells him Lyra would have loved him, grateful he's currently turned away making those pancakes.
The smile softens even more as she talks to him through talking to his baby, and it isn't really a surprise that she wanted to run last night. He could tell the moment he walked back in the room. He's got a lot of friends in this town, and his grandmother, but none of them talk so candidly well about him like Jyn does. No one ever did.
It really is kind of overwhelming to have her back, in whatever form that takes.
Pancakes successfully frying up, he takes a minute to walk over to the table, to lean down and plant a gentle kiss to Jyn's forehead. "I think I am very lucky too."
Jyn hums a happy little noise, without realizing, when he kisses her, wriggling Sofia on the table until the baby lets out a peal of delighted laughter, dissolving in baby giggles. It's an incredible sound and one Jyn doesn't think she will get tired off, repeating the action to the same shriek of happy laughter.
"Yeah, babe, you are incredibly lucky. Look at this girl."
She's not even being avoident this time, she is simply a dense motherfucker.
She missed it, and he knows she's not being obtuse on purpose. It's what gets him to be a little extra honest, hoping it's not too much. He's just so glad Jyn has stuck around as long as she has, and he knows Sofia is taken with her just as much as he is.
"Lucky you found your way back. Sofia and I are both in good fortune to have you here."
She shrieks, as if to signify her agreement, even though it's probably just because she heard her name.

Alright, maybe that was directed at Cassian, too.
