"So we should probably find another excuse for you to be here." Aside from the cake which is a perfectly acceptable excuse, honestly, but how long can they really press cake? It's still in her lap, but it'll be gone in two hours when Bodhi is done with his shift, if not in twenty minutes when she decides to start eating it again.
Cassian needs another reason to stay. Which might be Jyn's way of asking him to stay. Maybe.
She's...asking him to stay? He doesn't want to know how he knows this, so he focuses on wondering after why she does. Not that he disagrees, because he finds he wants to stay too.
Today has been full of far more uncertainty than Cassian likes, all of which seems wrapped up in Jyn Erso.
"We can order takeout. Bodhi doesn't need to know the exact time I got here."
"We can watch a movie," Jyn suggests, adding to their little plan to deceive her brother. She leans forward on the table, curling her fingers around the edge of it, careful to keep the cake box in her lap.
"TV out here is broken though."
Is it? Is it really broken, Jyn Erso, or as evidenced by the wince when the box presses into her ribs, maybe she just wants to lay down and the couch is not conducive to that kind of laying. But the television is actually broken -- it plays sound but no picture.
Cassian leans forward when she does without thinking and doesn't move back once he realizes. His eyes drop briefly to her mouth, which is super dumb? Back to her face!
"Is there another TV?"
Back to her face just in time to see her wince, and he frowns, looking at the general area of her injury with concern. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, edge of the box is all." Anyone would wince if the edge of a box poked them, especially if they had a bruise and a small cut. Small cut is her story and she's sticking to it.
"There's a playstation in the guest room that's got Netflix on it. Bodhi moved it there because you can't actually play games on it, but the Netflix still works fine." So it's out of the way of his newer game system but not gathering dust somewhere since it's still useless. Jyn was eventually going to move it to her bedroom but she's lazy.
He believes her, and maybe part of why is because she's very distracting this close. So he nods briefly, even if it's a reminder to be mindful.
It's basically an offer to netflix and chill on the upfront, but Cassian gets the sense Jyn wouldn't feel the need to be so roundabout, so he's probably reading into it. Which begs the question of why his brain went there??
"And is there a movie Bodhi would believe us to be watching?"
"Something foreign and pretentious," Jyn offers, half smile lifting her lips. "I wanted him to see a documentary with me once so now I only watch that critically acclaimed garbage to make a point."
Plus she likes the subtitles.
She sets aside the cake finally, scooting forward to the very edge of the table, legs unfolding to fall in front of her, knees brushing against Cassian's thighs in a way that makes her stomach flip flop. "I usually don't pay attention."
"All English films could be considered foreign to me." A smile teases at his mouth, threatening to fight it's way free. "No wonder he complains about his netflix recommendations."
Cassian finds himself shifting, leaning into the way her knees brush against him. His stomach rolls over from the feel of his legs pressing steadily into hers. He settles one hand on the counter beside her.
She shrugs, noncommittal. She's doing other stuff. Cassian's cute, but he doesn't get to know what she does with her quiet time yet. Which is stupid, it's all reading or playing the piano app on her tablet or carefully fiddling with some old watch or clock radio of her father's.
"We could watch something in French or Turkish... Finnish?" Languages she doesn't think either of them will know, Finnish is just silly, finding his almost smile is contagious and tugs at her own mouth.
He doesn't press after the shrug. He might be in her space for god knows what reason, but he's not going to pry that much into her life. Beyond injury related circumstances, of course.
"Finnish." He definitely doesn't know that one, raising an eyebrow in amusement.
Her smile just makes his grow deeper, like a contagion. It's odd how much he does find himself wanting to stay in her company far longer than originally intended. And she called him Cassian. Not Detective, or Andor. "It looks that way. I'd like to see this Finnish documentary."
Jyn slides off the table without giving Cassian time to back up which puts her directly in front of him, pressed against him, chin tipped to keep her eyes on him. After a moment she breathes out and steps to the side, turning to pad down the hall to the guest bedroom.
She looks over her shoulder, smile still flirting at her mouth, "Come on then. I'll introduce you to Finland."
There is a very real temptation to settle his hands at her waist and keep her in against him. He meets her eyes evenly and just waits, sighing a little when she steps back though he's not sure if it's in relief or disappointment.
He's still smiling though too, despite it. He follows after her into the bedroom without issue. "You're making it sound like I've never heard of it before. My expectations are getting high."
"I suppose it's not really about Finland," Jyn corrects herself, moving down the hall past her bedroom to the door at the end of the hall, pushing it open. It's not a bad guest room, considering they aren't the richest of people. It's tiny but bright, queen bed taking up the majority of the room with no room on either side, decorated by framed mirrors because Bodhi insisted it would make the room feel bigger. The wall next to the door has an old white dresser with the old television and playstation settled on top, controller tossed on the white comforter. There's no closet and part of the dresser blocked but a stack of boxes with Jyn's name scrawled on them in Bodhi's handwriting.
"It's about a Finnish footballer. But it is in Finnish." Which was the whole point of it in the first place. She hits hits the light switch inside the door, switching the overhead light off to illuminate the sconce lighting on the walls which glow with a softer golden light.
He takes in the tiny guestroom, assuming it only looks as neat as it does because of Bodhi. For all the times he's come over, he's never needed to stay over and make use of it before. It's snug, if that could be applied to anything related to Jyn.
"I assume the subtitles are English." Three languages are going to be spinning in his head, good times. He's not going to crawl onto the bed until she does though. "I am surprised there is even a third room in here."
He's known about it! But it always sounded kind of fake before, like Jabba being affectionate. Apartments for two people with extra space?? Fake.
"We can do the subtitles in Spanish, if you'd like. Or I could translate for you." She shrugs, either way is fine with her. She's seen the documentary already, she knows the gist, she doesn't need the subtitles for herself.
Flicking the ends of her scarf in her hair back over her shoulder, Jyn gently closes the door behind them and pushes away to clamber onto the bed, shoving the tiny decorative pillows back toward the wall and pulling the bigger, actual sleep pillows forward before she shoves back the comforter so that she can wriggle underneath it, sinking into the old mattress.
(They didn't dumpster dive it, Bodhi would have a heart attack, but they did buy it on the cheap from a fancy hotel doing renovations so its soft as hell. Jyn can't sleep in here very often.)
"It used to be a laundry room but we couldn't afford it and then Baze installed the washer/dryer in the kitchen so." So then they had this tiny room and nothing to put in it until Bodhi insisted on a guest room. For all their friends.
"I thought you did not speak Finnish?" He's pretty sure Bodhi mentioned her dad being from somewhere in Scandinavia, but they can't be that interchangeable. "How many times have you watched this before?"
It's very strange when she closes the door, though he shoves that aside in favor of taking off his shoes. He sits at the edge of the bed first. It's big enough that they don't have to be anywhere near each other really, but it's still just odd. This is the longest conversation he's had with Jyn alone.
"Am I the first person other than you to use it?" Is he teasing?? Maybe. Bodhi is friendly, but he likes his personal space, and he can't imagine Jyn wanted guests over all the time either. Cassian hauls himself up on the bed, keeping over the blankets and leaning against the side wall towards the end of the mattress.
"I meant I would read the English subtitles for you." She does not say if she speaks Finnish or not because that's really just irrelevant and she's already told him too many things tonight.
Which is why she doesn't answer his question right away, pulling a face as she pointedly pushes down the blankets, opening up the space beside her. She did effectively invite him for Netflix and chill and while she is happy to actually chill, it's going to be awkward has hell if he's way over there. The space is practically tangible. She doesn't need to make room for Jesus.
Once she's silently made her point, she grabs the controller to turn everything on. "Jabba uses this room all the time."
"It's the same level of translation whether you are reading it or I am. It's the Finnish in the background of it all. The English is fine to start." If it's too much, maybe he'll ask her to change the subtitles to Spanish. Maybe. That might be too much weakness.
Cassian looks slowly over the space she opened up, then back at her face. He gets the sense she will literally throw the remote at him if he doesn't move beside her, so he does. He slides over and fluffs up a pillow before laying on it, weirdly feeling less awkward now that he's not sitting far enough away to satisfy an angry nun. This is literally what they came in here for! It's fine.
"He might stop now that I've used it." He's not bitter about the cat at all.
"No, he'll just roll himself all over the bed until it doesn't smell like you anymore. He'd only abandon it if it kept smelling like you." If he stayed more often, that is.
Now that he's settled closer to her, Jyn seems satisfied enough to scroll through Netflix, trying to find the Finnish documentary she was selling him on. Instead she finds a comedy special and is too bored and sore to keep searching for Jari Litmanen so she puts on Alex Fernández instead.
El Especial de Alex Fernández, El Especial. Sounds... special. She presses play without comment.
Is it going to start smelling like him all the time?? Today is very weird. It's not like his coming over his rare, but hanging out with Bodhi is definitely different from hanging out with Jyn. He does not lounge in bed with Bodhi. "Maybe we need to test it."
Why did he say that?? Whatever.
He's kind of surprised by the netflix choice, even if he doesn't find himself all that surprised she changed her mind. It makes him feel a little happy, honestly. If she's not going to say anything about it, neither will he! Instead he just settles in a little more comfortably into the bed and pillows.
Does that mean he wants the bed to smell like him? Hmm. Tonight did not go the way she expected, honestly. Cassian isn't what she expected, either. He seems more at ease now, different from when he is hanging out with Bodhi or playing poker with the guys. She doesn't know if soft is the right word, but he does seem softer, lines on his face less obvious.
"Maybe," she finally murmurs, sinking deeper into the blankets. Maybe it brings her closer, maybe her toes brush his shin, maybe her arm brushes his stomach. Maybe.
There's a thud against the door, but Jyn doesn't so much as blink. A moment later two fat paws push under the door, reaching. How dare Cassian take Jabba's person away from him. How very dare. Why is the door closed, Jyn! Why is his bed occupied! Why is this happening to him!
Jyn takes the opportunity to nestle closer, snickering at the subtitles.
She hasn't shoved him away yet. She keeps inviting him in. She keeps getting closer, and Cassian does a very good job at not reacting to the way her limbs slide against his.
He doesn't startle when the cat slams into the door, but he does tilt his head up to look over at it. He bites back amusement when Jabba's paws shove under the door, maybe feeling smug for having Jyn's attention, which clearly the cat is after. It lasts about two seconds because he refuses to feel like he's getting into a battle of any kind with a cat.
He also does not care much about the cat when Jyn just snuggles in even closer. Tentatively, he drops his arm behind her. It's stretched out mostly over the pillows, but it is a clear invitation.
It's nice to not have to think about subtitles. It turns off that part of his brain.
When Jabba is not attended to he starts dramatically wailing at the door. Jyn still ignores him, eyes intent on the subtitles because if she looks away she will miss the humor. It's already delayed because he talks faster than she can read the subtitles, but if she pays any attention to Jabba, she will miss it entirely.
So the cat is ignore.
Cassian's arm behind her is not ignored, but she tries to be casual, stretching with a wince (because of her stab wound.) Her toes press into the mattress, pushing her back, directly into the little crook under his arm. Nailed it.
He is torn between amusement on both Jabba and the netflix special. Cassian doesn't think he's ever heard Jabba yell so loudly before. But Jyn is ignoring it, so he will... do his best to do the same.
Especially because Jyn wriggles her way to tuck herself in. He doesn't miss her wince, but he feels like if he tried to make it easier on her, she'd just scuttle away, and that is the opposite of what he wants.
Once she's pressed in, he adjusts himself a little bit and settles his arm more comfortably around her to keep her there. Yeah, okay, cool, netflix and cuddling? With Jyn? Absolutely not how he imagined his day going, but she's very warm and he doesn't mind, really, it's no trouble. Personal space doesn't exist between them apparently.
Maybe if he doesn't say a single word about it, they don't have to stop.
The cat keeps caterwauling, pawing at the door. Jyn continues to ignore him, but if he keeps it up he'll still be wailing by the time Bodhi comes in and then he'll check on them...
Eventually, she huffs out a sigh and pushes herself to sitting.
"Jabba! Shut up!" The cat stops wailing. And then starts again immediately. Jyn makes a strangled noise of frustration, swearing not in English, glancing back at Cassian briefly, before she throws herself out of the bed. She stomps over to the door, hauls it open, glowers at the cat who is suddenly silent.
Jabba meows, innocently, once and saunters past her into the room. As round as he is, Jabba leaps gracefully on to the bed, settling just out of Cassian's reach like an asshole. "I'll kick him off," Jyn assures him, snapping the lights off so only the television illuminates the small room. She scrambles back into bed and, well, if she ends up closer to him, curled up on her side so her ass is kind of pressed up against him.
