Jyn hesitates, because she does like the conversation and the company, but he makes the valid point that she is tired. It's only the mention of his meeting that prompts her to nod in agreement.
"Alright." Pushing herself to her feet, Jyn smooths down her dress, brushing the crumbs onto the floor carelessly. One of the castle animals will clean up after her. She moves to leave the table but lingers by his chair, quickly dipping down to kiss his cheek, so fleeting it's practically ephemeral.
"Good night, Captain."
She sweeps off before she can acknowledge she kissed him, hurrying out of the kitchen and down the hall with the quiet whisper of her stockinged feet and her skirts against the stone floor. She's just going to escape to sleep and pretend nothing ever happened. Sound plan.
Except once she changes into her nightgown again, she slips across the hall and crawls into Cassian's bed. He'd said she could if her nightmares returned by, well, maybe they won't come if she starts out in Cassian's bed.
He's glad when she agrees, because he really does want her to sleep as much as she wants. There's been weeks where he was under-rested and it's terrible.
He is not, however, prepared for her to kiss his cheek, so much so that he completely forgets to tell her a goodnight in return. It's so fast and quick, but it's only once she's gone does he remember responding is a good idea he's lost the opportunity for.
Still, he leaves dinner with a smile once he's finished and carries on the rest of his business through the evening in a pretty good mood. By the time he gets back to his room, it's relatively early, but he's ready to just climb into bed.
Only someone's already there. It's Jyn, obviously, and she's nestled in so deep he thinks she's sleeping at first; the faint ruffling sounds and the tiny movements tell him otherwise, and he bites back a smile. She's reading in his bed, she's not even asleep.
He shuts the door behind him. Despite the warm feeling that comes from seeing her there, he does get a flash of worry too. "Is everything okay?"
Jyn hums under the blankets, pushing them down to peer over at Cassian. She looks sleepy at least, hair all mussed up from being sunk so deep under the blankets, holding the book against her chest.
"I was worried, about the nightmares." Sure, sounds legit. "I thought I might cut them off before they had the chance if I slept here." Her tone lilts up at the end, turning it into a question instead of a statement. Maybe asking permission, if she can stay.
The sight of her peaking over the blankets is cute, and it takes all his willpower to keep that smile from taking over his expression.
He comes into the room at ease, moving towards the fire to throw another log in. "I don't mind. I did offer, and there's no reason it cannot be a preventative one."
His bedtime routine is usually to an empty room, so he sort of flounders for a bit before grabbing his dressing robe and pajamas. "Are you warm enough?"
"I am." As if to prove it, Jyn snuggles back down into the blankets. It's more to block her from Cassian's view and vice versa so he can dress for bed in relative privacy since she's already taken over his bedroom without asking.
"This is a good book," she murmurs, muffled by the blankets.
He turns his head so she can't see him smiling, even though she just snuggled in deeper and can't see him anyway. He briefly considers stepping into the other room to change, but she's buried so deeply, so he just turns his back to her and quickly slips into his pajamas.
"It's one of my favorites," he says, still pleased she keeps reading the books he's leaving for her. He putters around for another minute or so, briefly stepping into the next room, but when he comes back he is finally ready for bed. The only lights left are the candles they need to read and the fire flickering.
It's strange that she's there. Not in a bad way. Just different. He pulls back the blankets and climbs into bed, keeping to his side. It's not early enough for him to sleep, but he does sink into the mattress and get comfortable with his own book. "There's a sequel."
He keeps to his side, but Jyn has no such ideas. Once he seems comfortable, she casts aside her book and rolls over to curl up next to him, as close as she was the night before. The threat of Cassian waking up with Jyn clinging to him again is real.
"I look forward to it."
Just like before, Jyn sinks into sleep easily and quickly, like all the sleep she's lost out on recently has come back to claim its due. Maybe it's the warmth or the proximity of Cassian, but it's easier to fall asleep in his big bed than her in slightly smaller bed.
Maybe it's just easier to sleep when she's not alone.
Cassian thinks he should be surprised when she rolls over beside him, curling up in his space, close enough to feel how warm she's gotten under all the blankets already. He's not though.
He just smiles. He listens to the sound of her breathing even out and how quickly she falls asleep next to him. He likes her there, and he likes that he can help her sleep.
He doesn't fall asleep as quickly, but he does relax much more easily than usual. He gets through two chapters of the book before giving up, not necessarily because he's tired so much as he just... wants to curl up in bed. The weight of her beside him is a welcome one as he too finally drifts off, warm and cozy and buried together in the blankets.
