He knows where Galen's office is. He already knows where most of the important buildings are, but it's better to play dumb. But then Jyn keeps talking about how she spends her days and dang she's busy. It might make it harder to spend time with her, so he resolves to figuring out her exact schedule.
"Do you sleep at all?" Which is hilarious coming from Cassian Andor who doesn't know how to function without a job or task at hand. At least he asks it more teasingly than anything else. "Or is that reserved for weekends?"
"It was reserved for today." She manages to bite back her smile at his teasing but only just barely. "I have two afternoons off a week, a few hours between class and gymnastics. Wrestling ends next week." Which will give her slightly more free time, only because she hasn't found something to shove into that empty space now since she gave up shockball the year prior when Galen found it too difficult to watch his daughter play such a violent sport.
She'd be a lot less stressed if she could stun a bunch of assholes in the name of athletics.
Aha! There is amusement there, however tiny, and he takes it as a victory. "Please forgive me for taking up some of your sleeping hours." It's strange how easy the teasing filters out, even if some of it doesn't feel wholly like him. "But I know the feeling," he adds on, because sitting still is definitely absolutely The Worst. "I like to keep busy. I do get to make a lot of my own hours in this field, but they're long ones."
"Human beings require approximately seven to nine hours of sleep for it to be healthy." K2 is addressing Jyn's busy schedule, but it definitely sounds like he's talking to Cassian too.
"K2, you know academia doesn't lend itself to a proper sleeping schedule." It's a reminder of the mission as well as an easy reply.
"You won't want to focus on my father's sleeping habits in that case." It's fine, neither Erso is particularly healthy, Jyn still has nightmares, sleep is for the weak. Jyn sleeps for shit, but Galen is worse because he's a morning person, unlike his daughter.
Jyn pushes her bangs back before she leans over to blow on her hot cocoa, finally taking a sip. Predictably, blue whipped cream lingers on her nose.
He hadn't really thought about sharing a room until faced with it, and it's usually not a big deal, but now he's thinking about his own sleeping habits and hoping that he can at least keep waking up from nightmares quietly.
"So what you're saying is none of us make healthy sleeping choices," he says lightly, because clearly making fun of all three of them for academic reasons is the best way forward.
He takes a sip of his caf and double takes at the sight of the whipped cream on her nose. It's adorable, more than it has any right to be, and he's kind of curious how long it might take her to notice. "You don't feel that?"
Jyn's eyebrows knit together and she takes another sip of her cocoa, shaking her head in confusion.
"Feel... what?"
So no, that's a no. And thanks to the brain's defense to effectively erase the nose to not stare at the nose all day she does not realize there is whipped cream on her nose.
He should just tell her, because that would be the simple, logical thing to do. She's got her own napkin and everything.
Instead he just gives her a half sheepish smile, then reaches across the table and wipes the whip cream off her nose, showing her the blue now on his finger. "Cute, but not terrible practical, unless it was a snack for later. In which case, I'm sorry."
"Oh my--" She had whipped cream on her nose and didn't notice and then he wiped it off and she's going to die from embarrassment right here in the dinner, she's going to literally die. Color races up her cheeks as she looks down at her drink, feeling warm all over.
Wow, okay, not at all the kind of reaction he was expecting, and he kind of feels a little bad because he didn't really want to embarrass her. On the other hand though, the pink on her cheeks kind of adds to the adorable but he is absolutely not mentioning that.
"Sorry," he says quickly, but no less genuinely this time. He wipes the whipped cream off on a napkin.
"Are you overheating?"
Cassian pinches his nose and his tone is a warning. "K2."
"It's fine," she mutters, scrubbing her hands over her face roughly before her hands settle around the mug again. She does stir the whipped cream into the cocoa so she doesn't have to go through this again.
"I was blushing," she tells K2, because her father instilled in her the idea of teachable moments. She is still blushing, really, but it takes some time for the pink to fade from her pale skin. "I was embarrassed because I felt stupid and Cassian is very attractive."
What? She's honest. "Do you have any more questions?"
"Your academic achievements conclude you are highly intelligent, Jyn Erso." K2's eyes circle around, like he's studying her. "Human standards of attraction do not make sense to me despite all analysis, but I have gleaned you are correct about Cassian from various data."
The back of his neck goes red. Jyn liking him in any capacity is really the ultimate end goal here, but she's so point blank and blase about it. So, great, they're both feeling flushed right now, and the hot drinks probably aren't helping, and neither is his droid.
"I'll have a lot of questions, I'm sure. I am going to be here for a while. How long does our friend upstairs usually stay?"
Clearly talking about Krennic is better until he gets a handle on his own blush.
Jyn knows that the droid isn't complimenting her because droids don't do compliments, but the correction that she is not stupid, despite how she feels, makes her straighten up with pride.
She doesn't thank him, though, because she doesn't want to get into a debate about the differences between a fact and a compliment and how people can still be grateful for perceived compliments etc, etc, etc.
"An hour maybe? It depends on what he wants to talk about. Papa will comm me when he's gone or if they go to the office." Her shoulders lift in a shrug, it's clearly a well practiced set up they've got going on.
It is as close to a compliment as K2 will ever get, and Cassian is mildly grateful, because he doesn't miss the way Jyn reacts to it. K2 would be offended, but he is right. Jyn is very smart.
He takes another sip of his caf to avoid speaking again as the color on his neck fades. "I'll have to ask him to start doing the same for me."
It's a very good system. He's definitely going to start tracking Krennic's movements as best he can too, because it's undoubtedly useful for the Rebellion. "And how often does he visit?"
Jyn shrugs again, drumming her nails against her mug, though the way she peers at Cassian shifts slightly to something more calculative. He's very concerned with Krennic. She has his explanation from the elevator, but it seems... off.
"I'm sure he will. Papa won't want you to be uncomfortable. You're a guest." She glances up and away when the waiter comes back with all their food, setting it out in front of them along with their own empty plates.
She does, for the record, call him a guest with some reluctance. He may be cute, but that doesn't mean she's gotten over having someone in her space. She's still frustrated! This is her life, she doesn't like the idea that they're catering him instead of to her.
He probably should have waited to ask that question, or at least just asked Galen, if the look in Jyn's eyes is anything to go by. It's nothing overt, not like she suddenly knows everything, but it's probably too much questioning of Krennic on his part.
Instead, he focuses on the reluctance in the word guest and the clear annoyance she has with his presence, however much she's attempting to pretend otherwise. He says a quick thank you to the server first, but then to Jyn, "And I appreciate you and your father letting me be a guest. I know I've had a lot of questions, but the sooner I get a sense of routine here, hopefully the less I will feel like a guest who needs this much attention. I don't want either of your own routines to be altered too much by my being here."
That would definitely counterproductive to getting on Jyn's good side. Even if he's sharing her room, which is probably going to be the biggest hurdle and change in her life.
"I'm not letting you, remember? I didn't have a choice."
Which is the most irritating of it all, far more irritating than how cute he is. She didn't get a choice in her own life, again, and she's getting sick of having to go along with things she doesn't get a say in.
She still piles food on her plate so she's obviously not going to abandon him there because she is very much a good daughter. Even when she doesn't want to be. Which makes her rather sullen when she adds, "You're welcome anyway."
"I know. And we have already established I can still be grateful to you despite my intrusion on your life."
He needs to figure out the best way to get over that hurdle. She's not going to stop being annoyed that he's there unless she grows to like him being there. Knowing what he does of Jyn, that's going to be a challenge. It'd probably have been more useful if they were studying similar fields, but Cassian is not much of a natural scientist.
He starts to pile samples of everything on his own plate, faintly smiling at the starblossom. It's not a fake one.
"Would you let me pay for this today, as a small token towards my thanks?"
She holds up a finger so he won't interrupt while she's eating a piece of some glowing fruit. She could let him pay and he probably thinks it more a matter of pride than anything.
"My father is an Imperial scientist which means the Empire pays his salary which means the Empire pays my allowance, which will be paying for dinner." It pays for her education, it pays for her clothes that she buys and then gets bored with and throws in the trash which is actually just a donation bin, it pays for the excess she buys and doesn't keep.
He waits like she signifies, because he's curious. There are a lot of assumptions he could make about Jyn Erso and her decline of his offer, but instead he chooses to just listen instead of preemptively analyzing. He's not plenty of other things to analyze.
Cassian makes a face, an agreeable sort of nod and curve of his mouth. "That's fair." He eats another bite of his food before continuing with no argument. He hates the idea of being fed by Imperial money, but it's not the first time. At least this bits of currency are going towards food and not violence. "But I don't really want to thank them for that, so I'll still say it to you instead."
Polite by necessity! But Cassian is getting the sense that Jyn doesn't care about these things, so he resolves to cool it down. It's honestly easier on him that way too; that stiff constant sense of mannerisms can be exhausting, especially when the other person hates it anyway.
"Just that one time. I'll try not to say it again, how's that?"
Jyn's mouth twitches in something that might be a smile. Her face doesn't look like smiles come naturally, not with adults at least.
"That's fine." A beat, the smile is definitely there but it might be a playful smirk. It's honestly hard to tell until she looks up, eyes flecked with mirth. "Thank you."
What a brat.
Still, at least she's not being unnecessarily combative anymore. They eat in peace until Jyn's comm pings from her father. Jyn pays and escorts Cassian home where she promptly abandons him and K2 to her father's clutches and locks herself in Galen's office for the privacy. Galen could, of course, make her come out but he seems unwilling to bother her even more today. She goes to bed silently.
He takes that almost smile as a victory and lets the rest of the afternoon sit there. She probably prefers a little less talking, and when she disappears into her father's office as soon as they get home, he's proven correct. He speaks on and off with Galen, lighter subjects like school, but there is a definite knowing sort of air between them, and when Galen squeezes his shoulder in a goodnight, there's a thank you in there too.
K2 settles and shuts down in the living room, and Cassian sits out there until Jyn crawls to bed going over his datapad, checking in on missions and messages from Bail. He's still not sure Jyn likes him much simply because he's invading her space, but at least she doesn't seem to outright hate him.
