He does absolutely nothing to try and keep her awake for the movie, because she deserves all the sleep she can get. Besides, he's decided he likes being a pillow.
She's so warm that it doesn't take much longer for him to be lulled into a tiredness too. His beer long since set on the table, he shuffles a little to get more comfortable, slowly and carefully because he doesn't want to wake her. Jyn doesn't budge. She's practically deadweight. Cassian slips further sideways, trying to lay down, but Jyn is completely out (just like her daughter) and moves with him like a liquid.
He lays himself down and Jyn curls up on top of him. The reality of it should set him alert, but he's too tired to care. He lets himself fall asleep with her a little over an hour into the movie, his arm unconsciously curling around her.
The movie goes through the credits, looping on the title screen and playing the theme music throughout the house. It's the only sound for a while, a solid two hours - at least until Rey blinks herself awake in the other room. She just whimpers at first, which is usually enough to get one of them out of bed, but since they're on the couch and there's no response, she starts whining louder, half crying because excuse you universe, she is hungry!
Jyn idly stirs when Rey starts to cry, biology and instinct trying to force her awake, but she's too comfortable and too warm and too tired to wake. Instead her arms slings across Cassian's chest and she does nothing else at all.
She's out like a freakin' light and Rey's cries are still too soft to fully drag her out of sleep.
Cassian wakes up in pieces the longer the crying goes on, blinking into consciousness against the warm weight of Jyn on top of him. Rey pierces through it and he sighs, gently nudging Jyn but she's completely out cold. Still not wanting to disturb her, he carefully disentangles their limbs, shifting her fully onto the couch as he slides off it.
He misses it already, but moves silently towards his crying daughter with little hesitation. He scoops her up and she quiets, not fully, but she's satisfied to have his attention. "Are you hungry, little star?"
She curls up against his chest and keeps whining as he slips into the kitchen, boiling up a half bottle. "Very soon, Rey, don't worry," he whispers, and he keeps talking at her until deeming it warm enough. Instead of settling on the couch, he takes her back into the bedroom, pacing around it while she eats in hopes of the rocking motion putting her back to sleep more quickly.
It's the lack of warmth that finally rouses Jyn, blinking awake slowly to find herself alone on the couch. Oh. She frowns at the empty space that used to be Cassian, patting it softly and finding it cold.
Why did he...?
Disappointed, she pushes herself off the couch and stumbles through the living room back to their bedroom, dragging the blanket behind her, only to find Cassian rocking and feeding Rey. Duh. It doesn't make her feel less like she lost something but it explains where he'd gone.
"I didn't hear her crying," she mutters, moving towards them to kiss Rey's forehead. "I'm sorry, love."
He hears Jyn coming before he sees her, not surprised she eventually stumbled her way in. Cassian finds himself turning towards her, making it easier for her to kiss Rey's head.
"It was quieter than usual, she was further, and you had a long day," he says easily, softly as Rey's eyes blink slowly, dozing as she drinks. His tone is as soothing at Jyn as it is to Rey. "I've got her. Go, sleep. I'll be there shortly."
Is it because he's still half asleep himself that he reassures Jyn he's coming back to bed?? We just don't know, but he can certainly blame it on that if she minds.
She nods absently, feeling the heaviness in her chest telling her to be an adult mother but she just wants to sleep. She can skip mother duties for once. She gives Rey another kiss, her round cheek this time, and murmurs "I love you" in her father's tongue before she shambles over to the bed, crawling in.
Still trailing the blanket behind her.
His assurance makes her feel better and she doesn't know why but this whole night has been full of feelings she'd rather not think about or have so she shoves it all aside, wriggling under the covers right in the middle of the bed. Cassian can just shove her to her side when he's ready.
It doesn't take too much longer before Rey passes out again, bottle still in her mouth. He pops it out and carefully settles her back into her crib, hovering for a few long moments to make sure she stays asleep.
Satisfied, he makes a quick pit stop into the kitchen to put the bottle in the sink and turn off the movie. He stops at the doorway and finds himself smiling at Jyn burrowed in the center, couch blanket tucked around her.
He climbs into bed, but he doesn't push her away. He probably should. Instead he just tucks himself in, leg hitting hers and half wishing she'd finagle her way back to lay on him.
It's silly, probably. His shifts, arm brushing hers too, but he's already falling asleep, which is entirely his excuse for loosely winding his fingers through hers.
His half wish comes whole true. Jyn briefly stirs when he joins her, huffs a little noise of surprise when he twists their fingers together. For a while, she doesn't do anything, she could sleep like this, Cassian's warm hand in hers, pressed up next to him.
But then, eventually, Jyn rolls right over his arm so it's curled around her and she's curled up against him, fingers still tangled with his even though it leaves her arm at a bit of an awkward angle across her chest, she doesn't care. Her other arm drapes across his stomach as she buries her cheek against his chest, one leg looping over his.
She doesn't have an excuse, but she also sleeps better than she has in... decades. She could get used to this.
