Cassian always knows when it's Jyn coming to his door, not just because he's come to recognize her hoppy steps so much as his dumb dog perks up immediately from wherever she is, wagging her tail in a very specific way. It's the Jyn Wag (tm). It always serves to make Cassian smile, even before they started dating.
Sometimes he can't believe he and Jyn are actually dating. It's been a great few months of it. He was always happy to be her friend, but this is much better.
Even if the holidays are coming up again. Summer was different. They'd only just started dating, it was a little easier to miss her. He already knows it's going to be even worse this time, simply because he doesn't even get to go visit his sister to offshoot it while Jyn heads back to Denmark, and even Kay is headed out of town for a research trip, though he offered to cancel when he realized his roommate wasn't headed back to California for Christmas. It's fine, his neighbors Baze and Chirrut will have him over - they always invite him for all the major holidays he doesn't get to go home for.
Chantico hops off the sofa and beelines for the door. It isn't locked, and he already told Jyn to let herself in when she texted earlier about wanting to hang out. As soon as the door opens, the dog happily whines. Attention now please!
"She has been waiting for you!" Cassian calls out, very very fondly towards the both of them. He's been waiting too, obviously.
Jyn is speaking to the dog but it could just as easily apply to Cassian, even if she sits down once the door is closed and lets the dog leap all over her and lick her face. Boy might need to fetch girl and dog, since she seems happy enough to be aggressively loved by the dog, even if she winces every time her huge paws step on Jyn's thighs. The kisses are worth it.
"I brought those fancy donuts! I found a Groupon so Bodhi and I got a dozen and he took three." So she came bearing a box of nine that is probably in danger of being trod on by the dog. Hmm. "You might want to come grab them before they become Chantico's slippers."
He laughs, because she is definitely talking to the dog, but he'll take it. "She was pining for you all day!"
Maybe he was too. But he knows Jyn and he knows his dog so he climbs off the couch and makes his way over upon the announcement of donuts. He scoops them off the floor two seconds before Chantico's big paws stomp on the lid, holding it up out of reach while he leans down to steal his own smooch from his girlfriend. "You have to share, pequeñita."
Yes, one of his nicknames for his very large fluffy monster is calling her an adorable small thing. Stop hogging Jyn!
Chantico whines, licking briefly at Cassian's chin before she goes back to Jyn. Hers now.
"Do you mean me or the donuts? It's mean to let her think she might get donuts." Jyn is obsessed with the love and affection she gets from the dog, obsessed with the warmth and how soft she is. She misses the dogs at home and every time she cries on the plane Bodhi pats her leg and reminds her that the dogs won't forget her. She just wants unconditional love.
She does manage to shift to her knees to start the process of getting up and moving to the couch, but it's going to be a slow process, too busy scratching her fingers through Chantico's thick fur and kissing her face.
"You, obviously. I would like some kisses from you too."
He doesn't care at all how much attention dog and girl lavish on each other, it's always a delightful sight. He steps away if only to set the donut box up on the kitchen's island table before his dog decides she wants to eat them, then he moves back to sit down on the couch.
His dog is very big, it will definitely take a while for Jyn to wrestle herself free, until Chantico decides to lay on them on the couch instead.
Jyn continues to kiss and love and drown affection on the dog for a couple more minutes before she stands up, laughing when Chantico prances around her like an overexcited pony. She briefly wonders if the dog would like the ponies...
"Alright, mija, let's not leave Cassian waiting too long. He'll grow cross and lonely soon." Teasing her boyfriend to a dog, Jyn knows no shame, padding into the living room once she toes off her converse. Chantico sniffs them with dubious intent and Jyn pauses to watch her in case one of those shoes becomes dinner. She knows Cassian has trained his dog well, but. They're her favorite green converse. "Hey, babe, you're not going home over holiday, right?"
He is very needy! He wants to kiss his girlfriend and be kissed in return, let him live! It doesn't mean he isn't content to wait while Jyn lavishes attention on the dog for a little while, because it'll be better in the long run. Chantico would never stop demanding it.
"She is not going to eat your shoes, Jyn." He can tell she is pausing to watch, but the dog won't move away until Jyn does. He pats the spot beside him on the couch. Please come over and let him snuggle you. "No, I have just confirmed it with Shara for sure. There is no one to watch Chantico, and I cannot bring her this time. Not that I can really bring myself either. Besides, I would feel too awkward having Christmas with Kes's family."
They're perfectly nice people, he's sure, but Cassian hasn't met them yet, and he doesn't want to do that over such a big holiday. He doesn't blame his sister for spending time with the Damerons this year; it isn't like they have anyone to go to themselves. It'll be a nice good first Christmas for Poe, even if Cassian is trying not to let himself be upset over missing it. "I promise I will not spend it alone, Baze and Chirrut have already told me I am coming over."
She wasn't expecting Baze and Chirrut to sweep in already. Sure they all went over there for Thanksgiving even though none of them are American, but they could have given her a chance, now she has to rethink her strategy.
Settling on the couch next to him, she tucks her legs up under herself, letting her knees rest on his thigh. "Couldn't they watch Chantico for you? Baze and Chirrut, I mean. If they're going to be home for Christmas."
Maybe it's only for the day and then they have plans, but she wants to be sure Cassian can't see his family and nephew's first Christmas before she strikes.
He sets his hand on her knee without thinking when they press into his legs, simply for the sake of touching her. It surprise him sometimes how very tactile he is with her, but she never seems to mind.
"No. They offered that too, but I would be away longer than they could take her in. Though it is not just that. I went to see Shara so many times after Poe was born that I blew through most of the usual expenses. She said she is going to try and come see me in January."
"I've got a bunch of miles if you want to use those? I don't know if it's enough to cover round trip but it's definitely enough for one flight?" And she'd be happy to help him see his sister for Christmas. Even if Shara is trying to see him in January.
And maybe she is procrastinating her invitation because she is nervous.
If he could visit his sister she could push this off all over again! Until it's too late! And he breaks up with her for keeping such a secret from him for so long!
"There is still Chantico to consider." A beat, before he briefly squeezes her leg. "Don't get me wrong, I would love to go, and I appreciate the offer, but I do not think California is on the cards this season."
He could board his dog, but that's more money he doesn't particularly have at the moment, and he isn't sure he wants to spend Christmas in a house full of strangers. His sister will be there, sure, but she'll be busy with her baby and her partner's family. It's not the first time they've spent the holidays apart, and fortunately Poe won't remember it anyway. Next year he'll make it.
She agrees with his summation of events, nodding slowly before she blurts out. "Then I think you should both come to Denmark with me." There is a pause, as if she is realizing that she just asked, before she barrels forward with details. "Bodhi is going up the day before me but he is a moron and didn't get insurance on his ticket so they wouldn't let him switch it so we already have a spare ticket and my miles will cover you on the way home and we can transfer some to pay for Chantico to be in the cabin too."
It would be another houseful of strangers but this feels like, melodramatically, the only chance they may get.
He recognizes that she just invited him to Denmark, but it still takes him a moment to catch up to the reality of it. Mostly it's because she always gets a little... cagey about her family, preferring not to talk about them too much, always keeping his meeting them to a minimum vagueness. He always just chalked it up to the Ersos being across the ocean.
"You are asking me to come home with you for the holidays?" She is, but he wants that part of it specifically to be addressed. Even if he still has to work through the logistics of it being possible, a very small and warm smile slips onto his face simply because she invited him. It makes him feel warm.
"And Chantico." It's the dog that cinches it, how she didn't even consider leaving his child behind. "That is a lot for you to cover. Do you really... have that many miles? I would not want to put a burden on your finances, and I definitely cannot afford getting myself to Denmark."
Sure it's a house full of strangers, but it's Jyn's family, not his brother-in-law's, and that makes it much different. Jyn will have his back, like Kes has Shara's.
Seven hour flight plus a six hour time difference plus a twenty minute drive and Jyn knows they will be able to skive off early claiming jet lag and a poor dog that needs to rest after her very long flight. They'd left before seven in the morning and it is just past seven at night thanks to the time difference, if they throw themselves into bed soon enough then they can sleep through until morning and be free of the jet leg.
This is the prevailing theory, it has yet to prove successful, usually Jyn is half asleep the first full day home anyway. Mum promised an early morning run would clear her mind, but Jyn preferred the tried and true method of being headachey and actually wearing her glasses for a day before they got abandoned on her desk again.
"It won't be everyone, I promise, not for a few days. Mum, Papa, Farfar, Tante Aggie -- she's the nice one, Papa's baby sister, she takes care of Farfar." Jyn's Aunt Agneta is her and Bodhi's favorite, as sweet and bubbly as the rest of the women in her family are cold and dismissive. "Onkel Teddy, Aggie's husband, will probably be there for solidarity."
She pauses, hands twisted together nervously in her lap, enough anxiety rolling off her that Chantico whines and licks at her hands. She doesn't care about her aunts or the stupid holidays, she only wants to introduce Cassian to her parents and grandfather, but she knows that even that is a lot considering, you know, royalty and all. She doesn't want him to feel like he made a mistake coming here with her because she maybe probably wants him to keep coming back here with her.
"But also we can turn around and I can get us a flight back to school if you want."
There are still many, many things Cassian cannot quite believe happened and are happening. His girlfriend is an actual princess. It changes absolutely nothing about how he feels about her, but he supposes the reality of continuing to date her with this level of seriousness is much different than he anticipated.
Two, he is in Denmark. He has to admit, it's never been on his list of countries he wanted to visit, yet here he is, in Denmark, riding in a private car from the airport with his dog and girlfriend, who is again, a princess.
A princess whomst he sexted on many occasions. Somehow that keeps being the weirdest part of all this to him?
He can see her nerves come to life, the same as his dog, and he reaches over to tangle his fingers through hers. His own anxiety is churning much more quietly, but it's still there too.
"If I wanted to turn around, I would have done so at the American airport." Chantico takes the opportunity to lick at both their hands, whining again. This has been a very long and very strange day for a dog! "Am I nervous to meet your family? Yes. But I am still happy to be here with you."
He is maybe more nervous now than he might have been a month ago because, again, royalty. But spending time with Jyn is never an issue.
Sounds fake, but Jyn settles minutely with Cassian's hand in hers. It's worse because she is tired, which she knows, travel always makes her very grumpy, but it still feels more stressful than anything. Maybe even more stressful than when Saw taught her active shooter and bomb threat drills with live ammo -- which was fucking stressful. Teenagers should not be exposed to that.
She's happy enough to take the rest of the short ride in nervous silence, but she does stretch up to kiss him drowsily and point out: "Teddy has a family tree cheat sheet we made him when he and Aggie started dating, I bet he brought it for you."
She seems to calm down once he takes her hand, which turns out to be mutual, the simple contact making him feel more comfortable.
When she leans up to kiss him, he returns it with the same sort of laziness. Just like how easy it is to spend time with her, it's just as easy to kiss her without thinking. "Teddy is one of your cousins, right? Do I have to memorize everyone right away?"
He may have furiously googled everything about the Danish royal family on wikipedia already, but some of the cousins and more distant relatives don't have much to go on. They honestly all kind of blended together! Save for Jyn and her parents.
"Teddy is my uncle, he is married to my Aunt Aggie, she is the baby and the only one nice to Mama." It's obvious that she is tired because she fell back into calling her mother Mama instead of Mum. "Papa has three sisters: Lisse, Anna, and Aggie. Lisse is the oldest, then Papa, then Anna -- she isn't awful, not really -- and then Aggie."
She is definitely borrowing that cheat sheet for him, but she is happy to explain since Cassian is here because she asked and is meeting an entire royal family for her. Because of her.
"You don't have to remember though, I'll introduce everyone when the time comes. And don't worry, Papa doesn't care about ceremony. You don't have to bow or anything dumb like that."
He grins at the thought of this outsider uncle purposely bringing him a family tree. It's weird solidarity with a man he's never met.
"Good, because you know I would refuse to bow to any monarch." Why yes he will bring up his anti-monarchical views on the way to meet her very royal family. "I would only get on my knees before you, and that is very different."
Clearly the best way to deal with any of this stress for both of them is to just... be normal and light, run with the fact that she's a princess like it's no big deal. "I will remember them all eventually."
"Will you get on your knees for me while I am on the throne because I could think of nothing more respectful to the crown than making me come in the seat of the monarchy." Respectful, disrespectful, who is to say. It would sure be respecting her.
If he thinks Jyn won't defile the throne room, he is wrong.
Cassian laughs, and though he has no idea what the throne room actually looks like, it's a mental image he can't help but conjure. Even if they still have yet to have any kind of real sex.
He leans in to kiss her temple. "I can think of no better way to show how little I value monarchies versus how much I value you."
He respects her! He does not respect the crown! It's honestly perfect.
She hums happily at the press of his lips against her forehead, smiling a little because a. she loves his laugh, b. she loves his kisses, and c. she is very happy to be spending Christmas with this beautiful wonderful man.
Maybe it'll even snow for him.
It's only a few minutes later that the car pulls in and Jyn reluctantly pulls away. Not because she wants to be away from Cassian but because she is a stubborn cow and wants to open her own car door. She is lucky that Denmark's royals aren't all that famous because there are no paparazzi to snap her leaping out of the car in leggings and a sweatshirt she stole out of Cassian's carry on during the flight to cover her thin long sleeves.
"Come on, Chantico. Let's get those paws on the ground again!"
They've stopped in front of one of actually four identical palaces set around a courtyard. The blue green main doors are open and a tall man is silhouetted against the light spilling out from inside, along with a number of windows. It's not late enough that the other palaces are blackened, but two of them do look as if they are closed for the night. "Hi Bodhi! You look like a serial killer looming there!"
She seems in much better spirits after that, so hopefully it will keep up!! Cassian never lets go of her hand for the rest of the car ride, only letting go when she does as they pull up to her very large home.
Well. At least it doesn't look much like a palace? It just looks like four large buildings with a very large courtyard.
Chantico zooms out of the car before Cassian, ready to move and prance, because it has been a very long day of keeping still! She's practically dancing in place while she waits for Cassian to climb out after her, because as excited as she is to be outside, she won't go far in this strange place without him. She whines, nudging his leg. He feels very underdressed before this palace in his jeans and hoodie (he brought more than one knowing Jyn would steal one), but at least Jyn is matched up.
God, he barely even recognized Bodhi at first. Maybe he's still just in a state of quiet awe about everything. "I am beginning to think you are an expert at looming."
But now that he knows Jyn is a princess, it certainly explains a lot about Bodhi's odd behavior when it comes to his sister.
"I'm not looming," Bodhi complains from the door, stepping out so he is under the lights finally and they can see the Danish prince in his jeans and pullover jumper. "Welcome home, jerks."
If they're gonna make fun of him, he's going to be rude right back. That is how siblings work!
The driver grabs Jyn and Cassian's bags and brings them inside with ease since neither of them actually packed all that much because Jyn assured Cassian he could borrow anything from Bodhi, including a coat so they didn't have to pack their winter coats and suffer on the plane in puffy jackets. That would have been torture. Luckily the night is pretty temperate considering it is December, but Jyn is just happy to be out of the stuffy car and in the fresh sea air. She's practically dancing around the courtyard too so Chantico isn't alone.
Seeing Bodhi so casual makes him feel better. They're all a bunch of casual twenty-somethings! Two of which are part of the Danish royal family. He'll stop repeating that, maybe once he gets used to being in a palace for the next week or so.
Cassian nearly grabs his bag from the driver, simply because his first though his someone is trying to steal it not carry it for him. He's so baffled by the concept of it that he watches the driver take his bag away until they disappear inside.
He turns back to his dog, who zips around in circles, whining out a song before she just... squats over and starts to pee in the courtyard. There's no grass or trees, and she really has to go!
"Chantico!" he scolds, but nature is calling and his dog can't hold it back anymore. Excellent first impression all around! His fluff monster pissing in the royal courtyard!
maybe he would even carry her out like a princess in a bedtime story.
Sometimes he can't believe he and Jyn are actually dating. It's been a great few months of it. He was always happy to be her friend, but this is much better.
