He follows her gesture again, but takes note of her expression too, because it's off. She doesn't look happy, and she might even look a little jealous, which confuses him on several levels because he knows there's nothing at all romantic on her end towards Bodhi and vise versa.
"I don't think so." Least of all because she's got to know that anyone who purposely hurts Bodhi answers to the both of them. "From what I can tell, she likes him."
His attention shifts to her when she fiddles with her hair, and he remembers he's still holding her shoulders mostly because it brushes over his fingers. He could move them. But he doesn't. "Privacy," he repeats, because it still doesn't give him an answer. "For - fighting? Or for kissing me?"
"For kissing you, Cassian," she clarifies, a touch impatiently because he is smart, he should know the answer to that. "Why would we need privacy for wrestling?"
Her frown stays, forehead wrinkling. "How can you tell she likes him?"
"Her body language. She turns towards him and smiles far more when she's looking at him." A beat, because now he definitely thinks about all the times Jyn has smiled at him. "And she's asked me about him once or twice. She thinks he's cute."
It really should not be this irritating but he still can't figure out if she kissed him because she wanted to or because she knew it would work. He huffs a little, and his hands slide down her arms, resting atop her fingers. He wishes it was still raining, which probably at least tells him enough about what he wants.
She seems so unflapped by it, so unaffected, which makes him think maybe it wasn't a big deal on her end, privacy or otherwise. "If you're going to start bringing kissing into wrestling, maybe."
"Those were half unrelated incidents. You're holding my hand again." Hands, really, and she turns hers a little without even thinking about it. Her forehead wrinkles further, trying to figure out what he's going after.
She decides she probably won't be kissing him again which makes her heart sink deep into her chest, mourning the loss of the absolutely nothing they had, because they're friends. They're just friends. He is her best good friend and it was a one off, and that's that.
"How are they only half unrelated?" He sounds both exasperated and curious. Like maybe he's getting warmer.
His gaze drops to their hands and the way she curls her fingers a little into his, and he completes it, taking her by the hand fully. It feels like a risky question, but it comes out anyway as he brings his eyes back to her face. "Do you want me to let go?"
"No." It's careful, not too fast, not too slow. Perfectly casual. Purposefully casual.
"Are we playing twenty questions now?" Because he seems to be asking question after question, all about the same topic, and doesn't seem to be liking any of the answers because he just keeps asking more. Jyn doesn't know if she dislikes the questions but it's making her fidget in faint discomfort since she's already decided their friendship is all there is.
He squeezes her fingers when she says no, reassured. He didn't answer her first question, but it's just as telling that way too.
"I've only asked a few," he says idly, because even now he can't help but be contradictory. He thinks back to her dedication to privacy and finds he feels the same. "You haven't been very helpful."
Cassian just wants to know if she wants to kiss him again!! She's usually a lot more obvious about what she's thinking, ready to burst from whatever emotion is picking at her. The casualness worries him but - maybe it shouldn't. She wants to hold his hand. It's not like friends don't hold hands but -
It feels different. He should trust that for once. He swallows.
The rain comes a bit more slowly this time, starting off with a gentle mist that makes Hana squeal before turning into the thunderous downpour it was before. Cassian isn't on top of her this time so she isn't saved from getting wet this time, clothes soaking through quickly and clinging. She finds her eyes drawn to the way Cassian's shirt clings to his chest before she shakes her head and tries to push her too long bangs from her eyes.
"Alright it's raining."
She is too being helpful! Very helpful. So helpful she feels a little dizzy because she knows this is bordering on too much but she is incapable of backing down.
It's not like he dried odd in those few minutes, but the water pours down and Cassian is freshly soaked, drawn to the way it makes everything plaster to Jyn too. It hugs the shape of her and despite the chill of the rain, he feels warm.
He frowns for a second, the way her expression sort of falters and it pit's a pause on his own intentions. "Is it too much? Are you tired?" She's very powerful but her strength can be exhausting too, he knows that all too well.
The question prompts a glower, stormy eyes narrowed as her mouth sets into a scowl. Instead telling him to fuck off a rumble of thunder cracks over them loud enough for Jyn to feel it in her bones before the rain pours down harder. He doesn't get to worry about her.
He shoots her A Look when the thunder cracks, narrowing his eyes. "I am allowed to worry about you."
But it's heavier rain now, even less of a chance for anyone to see. Cassian scoots himself a little closer, knees hitting her legs. He squeezes her hand and lifts the other to brush some of her bangs aside, but then he leaves his hand on the side of her face. His heart thumps hard and he wonders if she can hear it. "Can I -" he pauses. "Is this okay?"
The rain keeps pounding down around them, but between them it seems to still, droplets hung in midair, reflecting (or refracting, she doesn't know) tiny distorted images of the two of them. Jyn wanted to see his face, still dripping rain from his hair, clinging to his eyelashes until he blinks it away. She realizes belatedly that her eyeliner is probably making her look like a panda. She doesn't really care.
He definitely absolutely is, and nothing she says will ever stop him from worrying after her.
It's much easier to see her when she messes with the water between them, and he wonders if it should make him nervous, but instead it just helps him be sure. He shakes the hair from his eyes a little and blinks away the water, things that would be less dramatic if he just used his hand, but he doesn't want to stop touching her.
"Okay," he says, decisional. And then without thinking about it anymore, he channels what's probably Jyn's influence and follows that instinct to kiss her. He leans in at enough of a pace to give her time to stop him, but when she doesn't, he finds her mouth and presses his lips against hers.
Jyn is not going to stop him, not even a little bit. The hand he released to cradle her face lifts to clutch at his shirt, fitting herself against him neatly like interlockkng puzzle pieces. The frozen rain around them splashes to the dock all at once, but they remain in the eye of the storm, rain pounding down all around them. The butterfly mosh pit explodes, making her tingle down to her very toes as the world seems to lurch.
Nope, the world actually did lurch, quaking violently. Jyn jerks back, eyes wide, as the rain abruptly stops like a faucet has been turned off. "I didn't do that." And then she passes out. Sorry Jyn, you did do that.
It's like a wave crashes over him when she kisses back, when she grabs his shirt, when they meet and fit together with an ease he's never felt before. There's a happy thrill, cutting straight through him and he starts to smile.
Then the world is literally shaking, the dock vibrating beneath him, but it's only when she jerks back that he does, blinking at her with surprise as the rain stops too. She falls forward against him, and Cassian lets out a long suffering sigh. She definitely did that, and it was definitely his fault, and he shouldn't feel smug about it, but he kind of does.
The campers in the area are looking around, some of them noticing Jyn slumped over and making the earthquake connection. He spots Bodhi hurrying over, having at some point disentangled from Hana.
With another heavy sigh and the tips of his ears painted red, Cassian shifts himself around and stands up with Jyn in his arms, not for the first, third, or even tenth time. Bodhi scampers out onto the dock and immediately launches into a thousand questions, following Cassian as he makes his way to cabin three.
"She just overexerted herself, you know how she is," he insists, but he's grateful for the extra pair of arms as Bodhi helps him get inside her cabin and settle her in bed. They chatter a little, Cassian studiously avoiding anything about what happened with Jyn and urging Bodhi to talk about Hana instead. It works for about ten minutes while they putter around the cabin. Bodhi hovers near the door after piling several sharks like a wall around Jyn, and Cassian hovers near her bed, trying to decide whether or not he should stay. She'll be fine, really, he's just torn on whether or not he wants to be there when she gets up.
He ushers Bodhi out the door with the advice of not keeping Hana waiting. If he leaves, Jyn might run away and avoid him. She definitely wanted to kiss him, but she does have a tendency to flee when she's nervous or scared. After a few more moments, he lets his feet carry him to one of the chairs and he picks up the giant stuffed shark already on it, tucking it under his arm as he settles in.
She has so many sharks. He doesn't completely fall asleep, but he does doze. A little bit.
Jyn stirs eventually, feeling a pounding in her head like someone is enthusiastically knocking on the door. When she cracks an eye open she realizes no one is knocking on the door and it's just in her head. She opens both her eyes and finally notices Cassian cuddling one of her stuffed sharks.
"Should I give you lot a room, yeah?"
Good morning. She pushes herself up on her elbows and immediately slumps back down. "You're still wet."
The second he hears her voice, he stumbles awake, sitting up a little straighter. He makes a face, loosening his grip on the shark - but he doesn't let it go.
Cassian looks over at her, with a sudden pit of worry in his gut. "So are you." Not as much as him, which he assumes is a Poseidon kid thing. Honestly she'd probably be totally dry by now if she hadn't totally wiped herself out. "You don't have any towels."
And all his other clothes are in his own cabin, obviously. He resists the urge to ask how she's feeling. For now.
Now that he's pointed it out, she realizes that she is actually still damp and she doesn't bother trying to siphon it out because it would just tire her out again and as much as she likes napping, she likes choosing to nap more.
"Bodhi's left some sweats in one of the spare trunks, if you want." Bodhi has some reasonable trust issues living in Hermes cabin, home of the pranksters. "He's probably forgotten about them by now."
He can wear Bodhi's clothes. Cassian is a little taller and broader, but he's borrowed things from Bodhi in the past. She's offering someone else's stuff to wear, but he takes it as a good sign anyway, one that she doesn't want him to leave.
He fluffs the shark like a pillow, then throws it at her. "Maybe. I'll have to use one of the blankets to dry."
She catches the shark when it bounces off her lap, settling it next to her like a companion instead of throwing it back at him. There are loads of other blankets, unused beds neatly made for all the siblings she doesn't have, but she gathers up her fluffy blue blanket with her name embroidered on the corner and throws that at him.
He scrunches his face up but catches the blanket, even if he doesn't move to dry off yet. It's definitely a very soft blanket. He appreciates the offer, especially in the face of all the unused ones.
Maybe it's the kiss that has him brave enough to answer the way he does. "I'm not sure I believe you."
"Well I was going to offer to dry off your knickers since y'can't borrow those off Bodhi, but if you think I haven't got the integrity to not look... guess you're gonna stay damp then, aren't you?"
Slowly, she pushes herself up, yawning. Her back crackles as she shifts about, pulling the rest of her blankets into her lap.
Well now out of sheer stubbornness he needs to just deal with whether she looks or not. "I've already sat here damp this long."
But he stands up, shaking out the blanket and glancing over it. He finds the only other trunk that looks touched and digs out Bodhi's sweatpants, then he gives her a look to turn around. "Should you really be doing anything like that anyway?"
"I reckon I can manage a pair of pants, Andor." She covers her eyes lightly with one hand, fidgeting in her own damp clothes. It's easier for her. She can just change everything in a bit, all her clothes are right at the foot of the bed. "Just tell me when you've got your trousers off."
Idly petting the shark she further questions, "Where's Bodhi?"
Cassian bristles but doesn't argue with her. At least she's in bed this time if she passes out again. Once her eyes are shut, he turns so his back is towards her, but at enough of an angle that he can glower if she peaks.
"He was here, but he went to find Hana again." He shucks his pants off, then his shirt too for good measure, before enveloping himself in the blanket and hanging it over his shoulders. It feels too - not weird, but off, if he just stood there carelessly, which makes no sense because they've gone swimming together before. Twisting his shirt, he starts to wring it out. "Okay." Translation: pants are gone.
